Do you carry a sidearm?
« on: August 21, 2018, 05:39:47 AM »
I'll be in North Central Colorado in 7 days for a bow elk hunt. This is not grizzly or wolf country, but there are black bears and mountain lions.

Do you carry a pistol with you on your bow hunts? I have a Texas CHL. Does that allow me to carry in a wilderness area during bow season?

I carry a glock 10mm, I use to carry a 44 mag. The glock is lighter and more bullets. it is in comparison to a 41 mag.

I carry as well when bow hunting in Colorado. And to answer your question, yes you can carry as and you don't need your CHL to do so in the woods.

I do carry a pistol during bow season. I really dont feel like having a close encounter with a predator or black bear with only a bow. To my knowledge there are not any grizzlies where I hunt but one should always have protection.

I bought a S&W Shield 40 subcompact after almost walking into a 350lb black bear who woofed at me from 15 feet away during archery. This year I saw a large tom Cougar following the 6 point bull I was hunting down a ridge. I know lots of folks who have had predators on their kills within 30 minutes.

Depends what State, or more so, which area of which state.  I probably should, but don't feel the need to around black bears.

If you feel as though your life is in danger from predator animals then check the state regulations for carrying a sidearm during archery seasons. I personally dont care about the regulations, if there are predators in the area, and I am concerned, then I carry discreetly behind my bino harness with a Kenai gunfighters holster.

Hunted Colorado last fall and had 3 sets of eyes approaching our elk kill in the dark. Not sure if it was bears or mt. lions but they wouldn't back down no matter what we did. I believe a few gunshots probably would have scared them off a little bit. I will carry from now on especially with a young kid by my side. Dont want to be caught between mom, the young ones and there next meal without a gun again.

I always carry. I use .45acp hardball ammo usually in griz country i know its not optimal but if you are using a sidearm its up close and personal plus i have extensive training in pistol craft.

Be sure to check local regulations regarding resiprosity for concealed carry. Some states allow open carry without a license. For bear protection, consider bear spray by perusing the literature behind it. Also, keep in mind the maker of UDAP turned to designing and manufacturing bear spray after surviving an attack, not into firearms.

I carry but it depends on where I am hunting.  In some places just bear spray, others both and some just the 44 mag.  I have had several close encounters with black bears and a cougar or two.

Good Day
