Title: Covering your face
Post by: MT_mulies on August 22, 2015, 09:01:24 PM
I was wondering how many people hunt with face masks, paint or nothing on their faces. I have  mask and have used it but I'm not sure how truly effective it is since I have called in bills and had them within range when I'm not wearing the mask. What do you guys do?

Paint, masks annoy me but I have gone without anything I do the paint of more having fun an goofing around,

If you get meat from the store then dont criticize me for having the courage to go out and kill my own meat

Paint or more than likely nothing. After 2 days in the field, I have enough hair on my face to stop the shine. A whitetail will pick you off even 30' up a tree, but a bull won't unless you move. JMO

I use paint, masks tend to rub on my face and make me itch so i just paint the hell out of my face.

I go au' natural with the beard. Less to wash off or rub onto everything that goes over the head.

Sitka's face mask is what I like to wear. It's an open mesh type material which makes it comfortable to wear and covers up your face well.

I used to wear a mask, have transitioned to face paint...but might just scrap it all together lol I think facial hair gets the shine off enough and wearing a hat blocks the sun pretty good too.

I grow my beard and add a little paint to the checks and my bow draw hand , i can't stand a mask

Sometimes use face paint but most of the time to lazy to put it on. I just try to make sure to never make eye contact.

A 2 day beard does it for me, but haven't had any issues with clean shaving either , its the movement that gets you, just stay still they will step on your toes if you can  play the game that long.

up until about 3 years ago I always painted my face. I stopped and it doesn't seem to matter. I just don't shave in Sept and it seems to do the job.

I just picked up this from Promont:
http://promontoutdoors.com/product/bedded-bull-camo-facemask/

I have heard guys call them Shmaugs, Buffs, Neck Tubes, whatever. I really like it so far, it's lightweight, easy to breathe through. And it protects my neck from getting fried in this August sun.

I had a hard time feeling my anchor points when I had a mask on.  I hate messing with paint so I just have the beard.

Haven't used a mask in years, and have never painted my face. Haven't seen a decline one bit in success rate.

Funny, I remember always putting camo on my face when bowhunting...when wearing blue jeans and a red/black flannel shirt.  Now that I wear camo clothes...I don't use facepaint.  I think all of it is in your head...I have yet to see a really good picture of someone in camo at a fairly close distance that can't be seen.  Pretty good gimmick they have...catering to the consumers camo needs, not what works.

I too do the beard. Face paint makes a mess and masks get in the way.

September Beard.
I do facepaint too but mostly for fun. I try to make myself look like duck dynasty.  Facemask or paint doesn't seem to matter IMHO

I prefer paint.  Only use a mask if mosquitoes are bad.

I grow my facial hair out during Aug / Sept. It's natural and easy

They are hard to find now, but I love spandoflage facemasks

www.amazon.com/Green-Camouflage-Tactical-Spandoflage-Hunting/dp/B07BFW5513/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1526101572&sr=8-2&keywords=spandoflage+face+mask

They fit tight to the face. They are cool in heat and warm in the cold. They do not flap to effect hearing. Nothing to wash off and they give you that Ninja feel..lol.

War paint is intimidating to other hunters an they turn the other way lol. I use hardy paint from Walmart

Fear the beard!  When I wore them, I never seemed to remember to bring it up during the encounter.  I figure my face will be behind my bow anyway...

I keep a primos stretch fit face mask around my neck and pull it up when animals are close. I always think I canít hear as well with something (no matter how thin) over my ears. Even if I donít get an opportunity to cover my face, it still covers my neck, which helps.

I wear a camo buff headgear around my neck to keep bugs and sun off. Then it's handy to pull up when you get close. Also serves as a beanie or dew rag as circumstances dictate.

I go with three options:

1) Face mask when it's cold
2) Paint when I'm bored...for fun
3) Beard only after about day 3

I use paint, mainly just to cover the brightness of skin. Tried masks but hated them, to hot, cumbersome and never felt like I got my anchor point well.  I also try to wear light weight gloves to cover my hands.

As long as I've hunted I've never used a mask or face paint... As long as I remember I've had a beard and yes it was gray back then too... I always wear a billed cap to cover my bald head and my glasses or sun glasses.... I'll have to say I've never killed a trophy class critter but I ain't never been a trophy hunter either...

I paint up with carbo mask.  Comes off easily with wet wipe and doesnít clog pours.  With that said I have always done it and always will.  Probably donít need to itís just part of my routine.
