Hunt Planner / Re: Colorado Draw Units 7,8,9,19,191

Straight up honest here for ya.

Those units just west of FoCo are tough archery elk hunting.
I have a good resident buddy that hunts them every year and he gets into elk but there are so many people and recreators that time of year it makes it tough.

When you look at elky spots on the map, so is everyone else.

Sure there are some good elk in them, but I drive right through those units and keep going when I go elk hunting.

Depending on what unit(s) you hunt, the Regs show one hunt code for 71, 72, 73, 711.

One hunt code for 74, 741

One hunt code for 75, 751

One hunt code for 77, 78, 771

So you arent restricted to just one GMU

^^^ Wapiti Will
From what Im hearing the SW units will have liberal bull tag allotment, cows will be restricted heavily.
So if you want to keep hunting your spots, you may even be able to in the Secondary Draw.

Phil's been a 'forum friend' for many years. Sad to hear of his passing.

Back in 2016 when I went to Alaska moose hunting, Phil volunteered to post my daily hunt updates sent via InReach. I always thought that was very special.

May the ducks fly low and the bucks grow big 'OlArky'

Hunt Planner / Re: Colorado Elk Unit 42
« on: February 06, 2020, 11:44:52 AM »
The Hunt Code for 42 also includes 41,52,411,421,521.

Based on last years stats, NonRes 1st Rifle bull tags went to the 2nd choice, so you should draw 1st choice if you want to try for bull tag

Id ask what unit you will actually be hunting in, and then do some more research

Id definitely look hard at the 1st Season, since the 2nd & 3rd are OTC

Elk Hunting Tips & Tactics / Re: Calling In Cows
« on: December 04, 2019, 10:11:52 AM »
Ive found it good to have 3-4 different style open reed cow calls and use them all. Make it sound like a party.

Keep the wind in your face, set up and cold call every 300-400yds. Call 15-20 mins and move. Id rather cover more ground than sit and wait as my target elk are the close ones.

Derek

We've killed a few elk Labor Day weekend. The key is to hunt where there isnt any OHV trails and only foot/horse back trails to access places [old logging roads]

Here is Labor Day 2014   :) https://youtu.be/t7c56LRv9A4
