General Elk Hunting / Elk travel distance?
« on: August 10, 2019, 11:08:33 AM »
What is the greatest distance that you know elk have traveled from water or food to bedding?

I have seen them travel nearly 3 miles from a mountain bedding area to low river bottom (creek) and back before daylight. They can cover a long distance over night.

General Elk Hunting / Ultra Minimum gear??
« on: July 09, 2019, 08:12:19 PM »
If you wanted to go into an area in the evening and stay the night; to avoid climbing a steep, noisy, difficult mountain in the dark, what would you take?? What would you need?

Sleep pad, sleeping bag, 5x7 tarp, two trek poles, water, protein bars, pistol, head lamp, game bags

By adding more water and more bars you could stay a second night. The idea is to not have a fire or carry cooking equipment.

General Elk Hunting / Cleaning Skulls?
« on: October 28, 2018, 07:45:43 PM »
Most states are now requiring the skulls to be cleaned before transporting out of state kills into the state to prevent the spread of CWD. What process and tools are being used in camp for the process of cleaning. Puts a hunter in a bad spot if you kill an animal the last day of the hunt and you got to leave.

General Elk Hunting / Colorado-HOT and DRY ?
« on: August 28, 2018, 06:24:51 AM »
This question is about Colorado but could apply to other states. Rumor has it that Colorado is Hot and Dry this fall. The DRY part is the most concerning to me. The grass fields have died and have been cut already. I am certain some farmers have watered the fields and some will still be of value. If water is low and grass fields are poor, what is the most likely result of elk movement???
I know elk can come from the top of a 10,000 foot mountain to get water from a river and return to the top by daylight but do they need water EVERY day? Will the large reservoirs up high be sufficient? If the grasses are dead, what is the most likely food source? Will they be scattered or bunched up near the water? Whats your thoughts or knowledge of elk habits in this HOT and DRY conditions?

Could you do it with this list? What food would be good to carry?

I have the Molle ACU Pack and use it for elk backpack trips. Anyone using one? I recently figured out the pack can detach from the frame and allow meat bags to ride between pack and frame. Anyone used one like that?

Elk Hunting Tips & Tactics / Pop-up blinds
« on: October 07, 2015, 06:15:42 PM »
Anyone using pop-up blinds?

Found a place that the elk are passing through every morning but they are of course moving into the wind which causes my scent to hit them before they get to me and you know what that does. I am thinking a blind would help to prevent my scent from going downwind and allow a close bow shot. I have never used a pop-up blind for elk and wonder if they spook from the blind. I intend on brushing it in and blending it in the trees as best as I can..
Any ideas are appreciated...

General Elk Hunting / Colorado Bugling Update 2015
« on: August 27, 2015, 05:06:01 PM »
As the season progresses it would be good to hear where the elk are bugling and what the rut is doing.

I was just told that elk have been bugling for the last week in North Central Colorado. Any others hearing or seeing any activity in Colorado?

I think listing as north west, north central and north east quadrants is not being too specific to someone's hunting area, unless you want to be a little more specific. Of course the southern sections are divided as well.
