Elk Hunting Tips & Tactics / Re: So close

Im definitely working that sequence but hes hanging up. Its been my go to but apparently its (Im) not convincing enough. Keep in mind this is my first year calling and Ive been practicing for months but theres nothing like real world application to set the men apart from...well, the elk.

Simple is better for me if you have any suggestions. But Im not afraid to try anything. And as bad as I may be they are responding but just not coming in.

Yeah I moved up and back and side to side. But couldnt get him...

I was back this morning and had 3 bugling around me. My father in law saw the legs of one but he never showed his antlers. I was back in about 100-150 yards trying to draw them over. Still no luck.

I think its a matter of my sequencing. I often get a response and got a few to the whiny cow call (thanks Ike). But he wasnt responding to my more aggressive bugles. He also has a growl that I just cant replicate.

Anyway I think hes bedded about 300-400 yds north on the public land -hes still bugling - so my guess is that he and his friends will be back about 5:30. Ill be doing some still hunting in the dark timber around midday.

If theres anything anyone thinks of in the meantime Im all ears.

Thanks all. And happy hunting.

I have a private only tag and had a bull into about 25 yrds but couldn't get him over the fence to shoot. I raked, I cow called, I located, I was aggressive but he was weary.

How do I get him the last yard? Any tips or tricks are welcome.

It was so cool though just doing that. Happy as I can be but hoping to take him down tomorrow.

General Elk Hunting / Re: Elk in the rain
« on: September 16, 2019, 08:06:04 PM »
It's very typical (in my experience) for elk to go silent during rain. It's a combination of a couple things really. They don't like to be wet any more than we do and it's much harder for them to smell and hear with rain falling.

I usually find they are active almost immediately after the rain stops though as they have been bedded down and need food or water.

General Elk Hunting / 2019 Elk Hunt Update Thread

Getting excited now...went out to scout last weekend for opening week of rifle hunting.

We heard at least 3 bulls and an unknown number of cows...we have an A and ES tag but really excited about the last part knowing what i know about the late rut.  Hopefully they all stick around and stay alive for a few more weeks.

Tons of sign as well including some well used game trails, water holes and a rub about 5 yds from a ground blind we determined would be good based on the game trails. The rub was made sometime in the 1.5 hour break we took for breakfast at camp

Does any one call on scouting trips?

How early do you start calling before legal shooting time?

This will be my first year calling. My wife is about to kill me and Ive been walking around with a diaphragm in my mouth for the last two months but Ive got a decent enough cow call down to at least not scare anything away.

Im hunting on private land and usually starting in a blind over water and/or meadow to start the day before getting on my feet. Im usually in the blind about 1 hr before and am curious as to when I should put the feelers out to see if Im in the right spot.

Thanks for your help.

General Elk Hunting / Making Coffee In Camp
« on: August 29, 2019, 11:37:55 AM »
I do it with a jetboil with the coffee press lid. Takes about 2 minutes to boil add the grounds and then 6 minutes before its ready to press and pour.

I do it about 2 times a year and lucky for me those times are coming up soon!

Physical Conditioning / Re: Time to hit those goals - CONTEST!
« on: April 24, 2019, 06:59:04 AM »
April Update:

I mounted my scope this month!  It was my first time mounting so it only took me a couple hours. Hahaha. I must have watched 10 videos in between each step. But I got it on paper which shocked several people who went with me to the range.

It was so great. Only took a few a few minutes to get it sighted at 100 and then by the end I was plinking a 450 and 600 yrd target!

Looking forward to improving my skill while I maintain my fitness in preparation for October.

Good luck to everyone out there trying to reach their goals.

Physical Conditioning / Time to hit those goals - CONTEST!
« on: March 24, 2019, 06:04:30 PM »
I know this isn't a conditioning goal in the traditional physical goal but am working to become a better hunter. This includes learning all I can from the UEH, practice calling and shooting my rifle more (muscle memory?).

My goal is to shoot my rifle once a month and keep my diaphragm that I just ordered in my car to practice on my daily drive to work.

I'll keep you posted how it goes!

Thanks to the group for the support on the forums and for the information in the UEH Course.

Your attachment isn't showing up for me for some reason. I've tried in on my phone and computer with no luck. Any way to save it as an image, like a jpg?
Lets try this...

What time of year? I've seen elk bed right out in the open in cooler weather.

It's early Oct. Fairly warm. Low 50s to high 70s possible.

I saw a discount for EXO during my review of UEH course, but when I went to enter it, it did not register on their website.  Is there something else I should be doing, or is the code stil valid?
