My favorite part is getting a look in to elk hunting tactics in different environments.

I learned that we need to do a better job of knowing which trails are allowed for motorized travel. Totally killed our plans A and B.

We made a go of it and found a sanctuary surrounded by roads. Even though we couldnt seal the deal in there we had it to ourselves since it was overlooked by everyone else.

Not hunting the opening weekend but will be arriving on September 1st.  Cant wait.

Same here, arriving 9/1 and will state for two weeks (though I wouldnt remind a shorter trip if my hunting partner and I tag out of course).

1. Goals: help my daughter shoot her first buck, javelina, or feral hog; tag my first member of the deer family

2. Success would be a filled elk tag by either me or my hunting partner, fun and productive hunt(s) for my daughter, finally using some of the five deer tags we get with our Texas license.

Id suggest listening to the podcasts that John Dudley and Aaron Snyder have put out recently.

Your setup should be fine. Both of the above guys would bring up arrow flight in case youre getting less penetration than youre looking for.

Our setups are similar (Im drawing 67#, 256 FPS with a 475 grain arrow, 125 grain heads and a bit over 11% FOC) so Im thinking its enough, but Im going on my first elk hunt this year and I cant give you firsthand experience. Im still looking for some public land hogs to volunteer for testing this setup.

If you go that much heavier youre going to see a big speed drop off. You may want to consider that and how much it will affect your arrows at longer yardages.

Continue my shooting practice, and sight in my 60 yard pin.
Finalize my food plan.
Practice calling enough to be decent.
Watch Land Of The Free again.
Finish my gear list, gear layout, and pack loading.
Finish adding waypoints to my OnX.
Continue my hiking and work on my fitness level.
Do a maintenance check on my truck.
Double check broadhead flight and then sharpness.
Remind my client and coworkers that Ill be out of touch completely in the mountains for two weeks.
(Public land deer hunt bonus: Trim all stand sites before we head to CO so we dont have disturb our area right before the season.)

Archery / shooting a bow at home.
« on: July 19, 2018, 09:21:14 AM »
When I bought my current house I loved the size of my yard, but never gave any consideration to shooting there until I bought my first bow later that year.

Im super glad that I have a place to shoot safely at my house and can easily back up to 40 yards. 50 is a stretch and its more of a pain than its worth. Ive been helping mentor a new hunter. Hes decided to get into archery too and I see the stark difference in practice routines since he cant shoot at his apartment.

Campfire / Making your own brats and sausage
« on: June 29, 2018, 01:31:26 PM »
I made some brats and only used somewhere between 15-20% fat to lean. They turned out great.

Always work VERY cold- meat, fat, and gear (as possible). If your fingers arent getting cold then youre flirting with trouble.
