General Elk Hunting / 2021 Hunt Update Thread
« on: December 02, 2021, 02:30:06 PM »
That was the toughest elk hunt Ive been on.
The Oklahoma mountains are low, but they are covered in cobblestone rocks and we got unlucky in that the temps were in the 70s and pushing 80 all three days. The treed areas in my unit were barely passable, nothing like a timbered north facing slope out west.

I saw elk, missed one at a long (for me range) and passed on a few calves. Normally this hunt sees 70-90% success rates. The hunters in my unit only went 3 for 9. Im more sore than after either my Colorado or Wyoming hunts.

Im also really mad at myself as this is a once in a lifetime draw and I failed (again) to kill an elk.

I have a five pin (fixed- no slider) and the only thing Id change for might be for a 5 pin slider.

I really like have the pins for if an animal moves and if I have to shoot with brush I can use the pins to help see if the brush is in the way.

General Elk Hunting / Arrow weight
« on: October 06, 2021, 02:13:12 PM »
I have no experience shooting rosies so take a grain of salt with my two cents.

I think overall that arrow is a bit light for most things. However, youre pretty close to you hunt and Im also against messing around with things as you approach a season/hunt.

If your arrow flight is good Id probably just leave things as is and I hope it all goes well. A really sharp broadhead on an arrow flying well can penetrate pretty well

I have an entry level bow and my arrows are about 465 grains. I shoot 125 grain Magnus Buzzcuts and my arrow speed is about 265 FPS. Ive never had an issue with lack of penetration since I arrived at that set up. That includes shooting a feral hog frontal and a time I messed up on a young whitetail. I hit my blind before hitting him in the neck, completely cutting the vertebrae in half before it punched through the offside shoulder blade. I also shot a big momma hog 1/4 to me. I dont usually worry about bones, I dont aim for the big one, but I dont worry about them if something gets in the way.

That sounds like a pretty awesome hunt. You might need to throw away whatever is in your freezer now to make room.
I usually try to thin out the freezers before season here. Of course I can hunt pigs all year so that tends to keep them full if I dont have enough cook outs!

Ill add that finding spots without pressure/reduced pressure might not be miles deep. Sometimes there are little islands the elk find and you just have to find them too

General Elk Hunting / Anybody else have terrible luck in drawing tags?
« on: October 01, 2021, 06:54:12 AM »
My neighbor and I recently drew a public land Texas hunt. We had roughly a 0.70% chance to draw this hunt. Its not one of the real glory hunts here, but it is on a State Park and the bag limit is pretty awesome.

4 deer (two bucks-only one forked antler buck)
1 javelina
1 exotic
Unlimited feral hogs

Oh, and they give you tags so we wont need to use any of our license tags. The only catch is we get basically two days to hunt, but can use bait (which will be needed in that kind of country).

Maybe my luck is changing some after all, now if Texas Parks and Wildlife will just pull my name for the desert bighorn hunt

Hmm, I have below average luck in drawing tags most years.

I did draw an Oklahoma cow elk tag this year so maybe my luck is changing...

Im sorry youre going through this.

You might consider some professional help, maybe more along the lines of a sports psychologist instead of regular therapist.

Other than that you might have to find a way on your own to make peace with this. That could be anything from getting a new bow and/or arrows to just spending more time around archery.

Pretty much everyone has had an issue come up in our archery journeys. Think back to any of those issues and how you worked past them.

Well be cheering for your to get back into archery and feeling good about it.

In my part of Texas pretty much all public land bans motorized vehicles so its all either water or walk in access. Ive called the local sheriff office or game warden (depending on property) multiple times so Id say report all illegal travel.

General Elk Hunting / Tire chains
« on: August 20, 2020, 04:13:50 PM »
We are hunting southern Wyoming for the last two weeks of September.

We are driving up from Texas and think it might be a good idea to have tire chains in case of an unexpected snow storm.

Weve never had cause to use chains down here and I have no idea about types. Doing a quick search I see some cheaper ones that say cable tire chains. Those make me wonder if Im getting what I pay for...

Any thoughts about type to get or advice?
