General Elk Hunting / Re: Free Gear Friday (3/1/19)

Best advice that I can give to someone especially new to elk hunting is if you think you are in shape give it a little more effort in the gym. Push it to your limits and then some. Ive found that is my biggest weakness and my goal to work on this year so I can push through the moment in the elk woods. Both physically and mentally.

Im on week 3 of Jim Stoppanis Super Shredded 8 workout with 30 mins of cardio on the back end. Actually seeing a little bit of weight loss. Would be more if I had a little self control at home.

I typically carry 5 in the elk woods and 3 if Im hunting whitetail from my treestand. In the elk woods Im a lot farther from my truck so the more I can carry the better. Whitetail hunting Im normally no more than half a mile from my truck. Never carry small game heads.

Struck out but landed a unit 33 muley archery tag.  Looks like we are headed to CO otc, or NM landowner prices, ouch.

Same boat. Drew a 4th choice Archery Mule deer in unit 40, will probably hunt early Jan next year. Looks like another SLO tag for 2nd season archery elk in 53 again this year. Not a bad tag but in the last 20 years it's went from buying a tag once every 5 years to drawing a tag once every 5 years.

It'll be interesting to see the draw odds reports for this year.

Ive had both those tags and there is a lot of potential there. Are you a NM resident? Only asking that for ease of scouting purposes.

Ill be working harder this year on my physical readiness and trying to prepare myself mentally. This will be the first year doing a OTC hunt in Colorado so I have a lot to prepare for. Wish me luck.

I thought the same thing on our opening day. I sat my decoys out and was doing some light calling. There was one gobbler just hammering on the roost. He would gobble as cars drove by. I look through the trees and I see this blue head working my way. He is silent but coming my way. I let out a few little calls and he came closer a few more then he sounded off with a gobble. Then he stopped. He knew there were supposed to be turkeys but he couldnt see anything. He strutted for a few minutes I let out a few soft calls and he hammered again. Its then when I realized and it made me think about one of Chris Roes YouTube videos about elk and entering through that magical door. He came through it but I setup wrong. My decoys were below a small rise that I didnt detect when it was dark and from his view he couldnt see them. He milled around for maybe 5-10 minuets before strutting off. Im always learning something in the woods and I firmly believe that elk and turkey hunting are very much the same.

Campfire / Re: What is the best tag you have ever drawn or hunted?
« on: April 03, 2018, 11:44:51 PM »
The best tag I have ever drawn is a NM elk tag. It might not sound like much but I know plenty of people who have not drawn one in 6-8 years. Unfortunately that is where my luck stops. Maybe this year the New Mexico and Arkansas elk gods will smile down on me with good draws.

Shoot a few bows and see what you like and feels comfortable to you. Get with your local pro shop and make sure you know what your actual draw length is. For years I thought I was a 28 draw. Ended up talking with a local pro shop and he actually measured me and had me at 28.5. It changed my shooting. Look for last years bow at a huge discount on price.
