No, not really unless you are a two finger search and destroy typer like me. I recommend the DVD I mentioned from Jim Horn. He goes into detail. If you can't find it, ask Rockie Jacobsen (Corey's Dad). He and Jim used to be good friends.

Trophy hill pretty much nailed it. I have called in many cows using the blind calling or silent calling sequence.

Elk are herd animals. So if you find one that is by itself, they are fairly easy to call in as they are looking for companionship. Spikes that are separated from the herd are suckers for this type of calling as well.

If you can find Jim Horns DVD on silent calling and try it, you will do well.

For you guys that just don't seem to be able to get it, hear is what worked for me.

You are most likely trying too hard. Lighten up on your air pressure to not even as hard as you would normally do when you exhale a deep breath.

I can still remember when I got my first sounds from a diaphragm call. I got so disgusted that I just said shoot and the sound popped out. Think about what your tongue is doing when you make that (shhhhhh) sound. It actually arches up towards the roof of your mouth. The harder your tongue arches up, the higher the sound you will produce. And you don't have to use hardly any more air pressure to obtain it.

(You can actually  arch you tongue upward hard enough to completely block your air flow)! This is why tongue pressure is so important when using a diaphragm elk call!

Trust me guys! It's like riding a bicycle. Once you get it, you will have it forever.

Colorado is the dumping ground for everyone that didn't make the draw in some other state. There is orange behind every tree!

I'll guarantee you one thing. You'll get a heck of a lot colder sitting in a tree stand hunting whitetails in Iowa than you will hunting elk in the mountains in Colorado during archery season. Save your money and use what you already have. You'll be just fine.

I live in one of the colder areas of Colorado. And I have often hunted elk during archery season in nothing more than blue jeans and a camo T-shirt. Toward the end of September, I'll add a hoodie sweat shirt or lite jacket. And I usually have some rain gear. It not only keeps you dry but is also an excellent wind breaker.

More important than the hi priced, fancy Dan clothing is a good pair of hunting boots. Spend your money wisely!

That's a pretty cool contraption you have strapped on Bareassissin! Might be OK for a rifle hunter but I'd be concerned about getting my bow string hung up on all that stuff. Then again, if you are a rifle hunter, why would you need a hand gun in the first place.

Hard to see any antlers at all in the video. But both were defineatly bulls. You can tell by the dark undersides :upthumb: on them.

That's hard to say. You can call just about any time. But if you get a response before daylite, stop calling and wait until legal shooting hours before you call again. You sure don't want anything coming in while it is still dark.

General Elk Hunting / Re: ELK Cheat Sheet

Well, now let me see, You have this bull that has responded and is coming to your calls. The very first thing you should do is say, "Wait a minute Mr. Bull while I dig out my cheat sheet and see what I need to do next"!!!!!

Just razzing you a bit! But seriously, if you need a cheat sheet you need to find a different hobby. We all learn from our mistakes and also our successes. Deal with it.

When I started elk hunting almost 40 years ago, there were no books, videos, or cheat sheets. As a matter of fact, Al Gore hadn't even invented the internet yet and there wasn't even such a thing as a diaphragm elk call. But I lived and learned all the way through it and had way more fun and and killed way more than my fair share of elk.

2-4 days to scout and 7 to hunt??? That's 9-11 days total. I'll take the 15 day hunt over that anytime.

Besides, usually where you find the elk this year, they will either be in the same general area or close by in years to come. I haven't scouted in years. I know my area good enough that scouting isn't necessary.
