Way to go Elk Noob! Amazed you were able to get the job done with that mismatched camo  :haha:

Haha, over the years, I've picked up camo on sale/discount so I own different pieces from every major brand really. Mostly use solid colors now haha.

ELK Activists? That's a new one, I'd call CPW and report them right away, pretty sure that it's not legal for them to interfere with your hunt in the field.

Wow, that's cool. Was the bull limping much? They're incredible animals.

What time of day did this happen?

It sounds like he didn't spook too much so he's likely not in the next county/area but he could have a fairly large range as is and may still be miles away tonight/tomorrow/the next day etc.

Thanks guys, this was my first bull with a bow, as well as my buddies 1st bull with a bow. Eventually I'll write up a hunt recap, but in short, this was the elk hunt I've dreamed of for years. Tons of bugling, lots of action and shot opportunities multiple times a day. Days 1/2 we didn't see much, but heard bugles. Days 3-7 we were on elk every day, almost all day, just incredible.

We did alright in our opening week. 2/3 and our 3rd guy had a few chances as well.

Just a heads up, I've been driving through that area as I head up to WY for scouting. A lot of it is closed off currently due to mudslides. There is a huge portion of the area where there are signs stating you cannot park on the side of the road etc. and the road is closing basically every time it rains.

Mudslides in the previous years burn scars this year have been really bad.

49 gets busy, but you shouldn't have a problem getting into legal bulls. Having said that, don't hold out for a "Trophy" this isnot the unit for that. You may get lucky and see 1 or 2 300" bulls, but do not hold out for them. You'll see lots of elk though.

Archery or Rifle?

That's a tough area for sure, I've spent quite a bit of time in there with mixed results.

Expect a lot of hikers/campers etc.

So I did say trail head, but I meant from the truck. It's easier to just say TH and it makes more sense imo. I very rarely went in on a trail and hunted from the side of the road.

I don't know where cohunter14 is hunting, but any unit I was in last year in CO was busier than I've ever seen it before.

I personally did not enjoy hunting OTC last year. I got into elk often, but saw tons of hunters.

I hunt to get food for the family and see animals being animals. The elk I saw in CO mostly went nocturnal, and they did not act like "normal elk" they were pressured beyond belief and reacted accordingly. It's a different hunt, hunting pressured animals vs animals being "wild". The amount of Bugles in OTC units has been dropping every year in Sept. I hear more bugles 1st and 2nd rifle than I do the entire month of September during archery.

Edit - If you are only doing OTC you're kind of stuck, but I've heard that going for a draw unit even one that takes 1 point will really improve your experience. I had friends in draw units last year that took 0 points and they were into bugling bulls often. I did not hear an actual "elk" bugle during my 15 days throughout September (glassed up well over 200 elk though so they're there, just not vocal). I heard plenty of Primos calls though. This was hunting anywhere from 1-7 miles from the TH.

If you're in an area with a lot of old logging roads they'd be awesome. Here in CO there is no point, besides they're being limited on trails all over.

Someone posted up a video on Archery talk about a year ago with "real world" examples of hunting off bike, it was a husband and wife duo,. Long story short, they hated it and didn't even make it as far as if they hiked.

General Elk Hunting / Re: Best CO Unit For 17 Points?
« on: January 11, 2021, 08:58:55 AM »
Is he non-res? Even so, that's more points than i'd ever drop for 49.

Non-res Muzzleloader took 12 points last year (3/13 drew with 12) 13 points was 100%.

Resident was 6 points.

I helped a few friends out in 49 in 2019, it's not a unit I'd be dropping over 10 points on. There are a lot of elk, but not many huge bulls. Unfortunatley, having 17 points puts you in between a bunch of units, I think there are certainly better than 49, but your options are limited.

Edit: Get GoHunt insider, it will help you find a unit that you think will give you the best chance for success. Having said I wouldn't spend 10+ points in 49 doesn't mean it won't be a good hunt. If his goal is to see elk, and potentially get a bull then 49 would be a great hunt, if he's holding out for a 300"+ bull then I certainly wouldn't go for 49.
