Hunt Planner / Idaho Diamond Creek zone
« on: November 13, 2020, 07:00:05 PM »
Hello all,
I'm looking at getting after the elk in Idaho again next year, and looking at exploring a new area. Hunted Lemhi last year, had fun, saw elk, but came home with nothing but tag soup.
The diamond creek area looks interesting, but from what I've read, its a long shot to get the tag before they're sold out. So my questions for now would be, is it REALLY that hard to get, where it might not be worth staying up until 1 a.m. to try and get one? And second, hows the hunting pressure? Gohunt shows about 1000 hunters surveyed last year for that zone. Im all about getting off roads and off trail, I prefer it actually. But will that get me away from people?
In short, is it worth trying for, or should I focus research elsewhere?

Archery / Speed & Kinetic Energy
« on: July 09, 2019, 04:23:44 AM »
I think I'm looking more for a confidence boost than anything else with this post, but I'll throw it out and see what the resident pros think.
The other day when I was doing all my shooting and NOT tuning (see previous post haha) I noticed, maybe just in my head, that it seemed to take around 7 minutes for my arrow to hit the 40 yard target after it left my bow. At 50, I calculated it to be around 10 minutes from bow to bullseye. 60 yards, I can shoot, walk slowly to the target, and beat the arrows by a half step.
Ok maybe I exaggerated a bit. But it seems SO SLOW! I know I'm going to be slower than most with a 27" draw. My 480 gr arrows aren't exactly built for speed either.  But man, sure seems like game might be jumping the string pretty easy. I chrono'd it yesterday. 265 fps with 125 gr. 262 with 100 grain. That small of a difference surprised me, but I'm glad. I already bought my 6 Strickland 125's. With my bow and arrow set up, it calculates out to almost 75 lbs of kinetic energy.
Am I overthinking? Maybe my plan is just coming together too nicely and I'm looking for things to worry about with the season just around the corner.

Archery / Mathews Z7 timing
« on: July 06, 2019, 02:36:06 PM »
About a month ago, I had a new 60x string put on my Mathews z7. The Mathews guy at the store where I got it put on said he got it all tuned and shooting bullet holes thru paper. I got it home. shot it, and my groups are awesome. To the point I don't shoot at the same spot very often anymore for the sake of keeping all my arrows. But, here's where my question comes in. I was looking over my bow, for no particular reason, when I noticed the cable is nowhere near centered in the timing hole on the cam. Is this a big deal, or don't fix it if it ain't broke?

General Elk Hunting / Homemade backcountry food
« on: June 15, 2019, 07:51:57 PM »
Looking for idea . What are some meals you guys prep ahead of time to bring with on the hunt? I made the protein bars from Ryan Lampers website today just to try them. Definitely bringing some of those with. But now I'm looking for recipes or ideas for actual meals, not just snacks.

General Elk Hunting / Pack goats
« on: June 07, 2019, 05:25:15 PM »
Its almost here.....so ready and yet not ready. Still working out final little details and getting in shape. I've been reading and watching alot lately about pack llamas and pack goats. I think both would be awesome,  but I think the goats would almost add an element of novelty and, for me anyways, entertainment and humor. Pack goats....I've mentioned it to a few friends. They thought I was joking. Sounds hilarious,  but looks perfect. I'm already planning on running pretty light, so they wouldn't have to carry much on the way in at least. Hope they're heavy on the way out of course... So, what's everyone here think? Any personal experiences or opinions? I'm taking a scouting trip in August and might rent some for that as a test run.

Hunting Gear / Kuiu Icon Pro 5200
« on: March 20, 2019, 10:02:00 AM »
Anyone have any insight on the kuiu Icon pro packs? I know the main debate is MR vs EXO most of the time, and I'm in the same boat. But I looked at kuiu the other day. Same weight, same type setup, and slightly cheaper than the EXO. Now I'm torn. I would say I finally got the wife's approval to buy one of these packs, but it's more like she just surrendered to the fact that it's happening haha. Now I need to figure out which pack to buy. HELP!

Physical Conditioning / Planet Fitness?
« on: February 03, 2019, 09:25:46 AM »
Just wondering if any of you guys have any experience with this place. One just opened by my house, so thinking of joining since the North Dakota winter isn't real good for training outside. I've read a few reviews, some good, some bad. Just trying to make up my mind.

General Elk Hunting / Best month to scout?
« on: January 20, 2019, 09:33:10 AM »
Thinking about making a trip out to Idaho before archery season to at least get the lay of the land and get a feel for what I'm working with out there. Question is, when? I plan on hunting the beginning of September. I'm thinking either June, or August. My July days off will he used up on fishing tournaments. I'm leaning towards June, unless there's a reason to go with August.

Archery / Paper tuning/rest adjustment question
« on: January 16, 2019, 05:16:14 PM »
Guys,
Made my 1000th attempt at getting that sweet bullet hole with my Mathews Z7 today. Had it down to about a quarter inch tear before I stripped out my rest (QAD HDX). That's a separate issue I'm working on getting fixed. My question is about the end result right before it broke. Had a bad left tear for forever. Yoke tuned it from about 1.75" down to around .5". Adjusted the rest for final touches. At that point, my rest was so far to the right, the arm (or whatever it's called) was almost touching the riser. Looks ridiculous. Should it be like that, or is that a sign that my tuning isn't as close as I thought? Could I possibly OVER yoke tune to the point of a RIGHT tear to make room to move the rest to the left?

Hunting Gear / Backpack hunting tent/tarp?
« on: December 31, 2018, 12:56:39 PM »
Planning a hunt in Idaho, early September archery. Will have a Basecamp at the truck, and bivvy/backpack hunt 2-3 days at a time. I'm torn between a 1P tent, mainly the idea of having a floor, or just getting an ultralight tarp and setting up with trekking poles, branches, etc. I have a 2P Cabela's Dash Duo tent that I love, but at 5 lbs, I don't love it THAT much. I'd like to go as light as possible. At 5'6 and 145 lbs, I'd rather not haul a 40+ pound pack around. Anyone have suggestions on what to look at?

Archery / Arrows for elk?
« on: December 29, 2018, 11:22:54 AM »
Hello all,
I'll be going on my first archery elk hunt in September, and am wondering what type of arrow setup I should use. I'm just a little fella, so my arrows are only 27". My main question is about FOC, and if adding weight to the front will negativity impact my shorter arrows? I just figure with fewer inches to my arrows, I obviously have fewer grains, so if I want to beef them up, I'll need more up front. But if adding weight ruins flight, not worth it.

General Elk Hunting / Idaho archery 37A
« on: December 13, 2018, 10:22:22 AM »
Hello all,
New to the forum, hoping for a little guidance. Just got my 2019 archery elk tag for Idaho in the Lemhi zone. As of now, planning on hunting 37a. Does anyone have experience in this area and willing to give some pointers? I don't need secret spots or anything like that. More just a confidence boost that I made a decent choice.
