Other Big Game Hunting / 2021 CO antelope unit recommendations
« on: July 09, 2020, 11:58:05 AM »
I started putting in for Antelope PP's a long time ago just cause it was easy.

I now find I'm sitting on 8 PP's, and I may want to use them in 2021.

if anyone has a recommendation on destination, please let me know.  I know most of the CO goat herd is east of 25.

from my review of the draw results, it looks like it takes NR's a TON of points to draw some units where there are relatively few tags, and not very many points in other units.  Since I'm sitting on so many PPs, I'd like something that takes >5 PP's if possible.

I'm VERY open to recommendations. I'm really an elk hunter, who just realized that it may be time to hunt goats cause I have enough PP's to do so. :)

thanks gents, and be well.

General Elk Hunting / launching Sat for Co 2nd rifle
« on: October 08, 2019, 06:55:49 AM »
our camp of 5 will include:

one bull elk tag (my dad)
two guys with muley buck + bear tags (inc me)
one guy with a muley buck tag

hunting a draw only unit SW co, 2nd rifle.

we've been putting in for muley PP's FOREVER, so I'm glad we're finally cashing them in. :)

can't wait to be in camp.

hoping for redemption.  on the 2018 trip (same unit) we saw TONS of elk the week prior to opener, but hardly anything during the season.  I think the snow the week prior pushed them out of the high country (where we were focused).

General Elk Hunting / launching tomorrow for CO 1st rifle
« on: October 04, 2018, 02:07:44 PM »

we had planned to leave Sat am., but because of anticipated storms on Sunday, we're launching a day early for the mountains.  decision was made this morning.

while I was already distracted and somewhat unproductive, we've moved completely off-radar and into counterproductive mode.

thank goodness, I was able to get done all the stuff I'd need to get done already. :)

good luck to all who will be heading to the mountains.  I'll be back with a report in a couple weeks.  Godspeed, all.

General Elk Hunting / Co tags coming in slow?
« on: July 17, 2018, 04:45:04 PM »
our group is all out of staters, first rifle.  half cow, half bull tags.

7 of the 10 tags (a mix of youth/adult, and a mix of cow/bull) showed up a week ago. the other 3 havent shown up at all.

anyone else experiencing this?  do I need to be calling CDOW to inquire?

General Elk Hunting / DRASH tents - any experience??
« on: January 30, 2018, 06:46:17 AM »
I've seen a couple of these advertised online, but I have no experience with them.

typical product:

2 minute video on assembly/setup:

deployment is crazy fast (compared to our "normal" elk tents), so I'm curious if anyone has experience with one of these on the mountain.

key concerns:

  • being so light is it prone to wind problems?
  • snow load/durability
thanks in advance for any feedback.

Hunt Planner / how to pick a unit in Wyoming?
« on: December 27, 2017, 06:04:35 PM »
I have hunted CO almost yearly since 2008.

we rifle hunt even # years in a draw only unit.  some of us bowhunt an OTC unit in odd # years.

my group is thinking of trying Wyoming for rifle hunts in those odd # years.

I've driven across WY twice on family vacations to Tetons/Yellowstone, but otherwise have limited knowledge of the state.

do yall recommend that I contact WY F&G to ask for advice on which unit to target?

Specifics of what we'd be targeting:

  • unit that is draw only for rifle seasons
  • can be "predictably" drawn with one PP
  • national forest road access to setup a vehicle-based camp
logistically, it'd make sense to target a unit on the southern side of the state just to minimize drive times, but we're obviously willing to drive farther if it means improved encounters.
