Sautťd elk steaks in butter with Montreal seasoning, made some rice pilaf, and poured a few drams of single malt scotch after dinner :train: . Probably not the best for me, put a smile on my face though :-D

I herniated a disc about a week and a half before Christmas.  Was hard to walk or sit for more than a minute for a couple weeks due to really bad sciatica.  Have been working hard on PT exercises and have gotten to the point where I can walk 20 minutes on the treadmill, using side rails for support and short breaks at times.  I'm also hitting the power rack with lightweight squats and Romanian deadlifts to carefully work my posterior chain and core.  Making progress each day.

I had been consistently running and lifting up until that point, so this is a big reset button but I will be ready for fall and hope to be stronger than ever.

I try to get in a dog walk nightly, I aim for at least 7500 steps a day.
Walking to and from train for work helps with the steps.

I need to focus on strength and cardio for a western hunt.

Currently at 228 and 6í4.  Want to get back to 210 or less before my next hunt.

Hope to reply back with positive results!

Hitting the gym, daily. 10 minutes run on treadmill followed by 50 minutes heavy lifting. When weather permits, trading gym for 3 mile street run. Can't wait for warmer weather!

Just wrapped up Land of the Free 2.0 and feeling impatient as I await September.

i loaded up my hunting pack yesterday and climbed up a trail.
it was 18 miles there and back.  i swear, it felt like it was uphill both ways.  my pack was about 30lbs.
it was kinda soul crushing, but i made it.  took us 8 hours.  slip sliding in the mud.
now?  i grunt when i get up from my desk. :)

After a solid month of work travel since early January, I kicked off my 2019 season prep in earnest this week. Most of my gym prep is in a Crossfit Box. The Crossfit Open starts next week, so we're tuning up for that event, and I have a goal of completing the Murph (https://www.crossfit.com/workout/2005/08/18#/comments) workout on Memorial Day, with a weight vest, in under an hour for the first time.

Tuesday
5 rounds, 90 seconds on, 90 seconds off
"DT": 12 deadlifts, 9 hang power cleans, 6 push jerks (unbroken at 75lbs)
After DT each round, finish the 90 seconds on the erg bike

Wednesday
8 rounds
1 Round: 1min ski erg, 1min erg bike, 1min double unders, 1min row, 1min rest
Reps counted are calories or double unders, depending on the movement. I tallied 660 reps.

Friday and Saturday I have a futsal tournament and will be beating my butt up and down the court.

Let's go.

Brian

I alternated every 30 seconds on the run with going up and down .5 on the treadmill.
So 30 seconds at 7.5, then 30 seconds at 8, repeat.

i have really commited to mtn biking more and more.

jogging hurts my knees eventually, and i am saving that pain for the mountains.
climbing on a mountain bike is unique to me.  i can really grind up mountains.  my heart usually can red-line.  (i need to get a HR monitor).,, then a gentle recoup on a downhill, and back at it.  i am starting earlier than i ever had.  this year, i have a tag in my pocket.  more vested interest.
on my typical climb, i was stopping for a breather.  now?  i keep going, non stop.  get to the top and rest there, hydrate.  rip downhill for the fun stuff.

i do my know my cardio is getting better and better.   that is good for everything besides just chasing elk.

i need to eat less for sure.

I bought a peloton. Delivered friday... Not sure buying exercise equipment counts until you actually use it. I was off to a great start in feb-march and then we had a baby. Most recently my exercise has come in the form of yardwork and getting the garden ready, which isn't nothing but isn't enough. I have dropped about 14lbs since late April, with another 10 or so to go. Down from 232 to 218, hoping to be sub-210. I also bought a sandbag exercise bag and built a plyo box, which I've used a few times. My goal is to start alternating gym days (or bike, depending on home demands) and hill with pack days (w/ the sandbag (50 or 70lbs, prob start at 50).

So basically, I have a plan and need to get after it. In my defense, breaking new ground on a 1000sqft garden, and then rototilling it a second time because it firmed up before I could get plants in due to weather... All excuses the elk won't care about though. So, gym tomorrow. Peloton delivered friday.

8.5 mile hike. 35 pound pack. 2 hours 46 minutes with no breaks other than stopping to take a few pictures. Next one will be heavier and keep working up until go time when I get to the mountains with my 25 pound pack. First real test of the MR metcalf today. I give it a 10/10.

Made it to the gym this afternoon. Honestly, my above post probably helped keep me honest. I actually had a heck of a workout and gained some confidence that my yardwork regiment hasn't been for nothing. I wondered if I could generate some productivity out of my "workouts" for a few weeks and I think it wasn't for nothing. At least it kept the wife pretty happy. Past time to buckle down.

Every year I start doing hikes with weights and basic lifting. Last year my son got married. My wife wanted to lose 30lbs before the wedding. We joined the Y and started going to boot camp classes, hiking and eating better. I did the classes with her for inspiration but quickly found out the harder you worked in class I was getting in better shape quicker with much faster recovery. I lost ten lbs and my wife lost 35lbs by weeding time and looks great. We have kept it up and both feel way better all year round. The class never gets easier because the better shape you get in, you just work harder. I still add in some weight work in but the classes have really made a change.

Tonight I finally loaded up my new MR Metcalf with a good amount of my gear and a 50lb sand bag. That plus water came out to about 75lbs. Then, being a flatlander, I headed to the nearest "ski hill", which is about 270' of elevation. I managed 2 trips up, which is better than zero trips. This is my first time working out with a full load in the pack. I usually do some hills, ride a bike/jog, and lift weights. And that's being generous, I definitely fade off as the trip approaches and end up more focused on getting my shooting locked in. I'm going solo this year so I don't have anyone to share a pack out with (no successful hunts to date, 0/3), so conditioning for the pack out seems far more critical.

One benefit of doing this is that I now definitely know which muscles need to get stronger in the next couple months. I also learned some lessons in how to (and not to) stand and catch your breath on a steep incline with 75lbs on your back and little strength left in your legs. (hint: weight downhill poses serious drawbacks).

All in all, a positive step forward tonight. It got easier once I reminded myself of the only reason that this would be happening on the mountain.

Peloton is delivered tomorrow so maybe I'll get to ride off some of the soreness I'll no doubt be experiencing.

I started using the Nike Run Club app. It allows you to set up plans with mileage and if you add friends you can compete with each other for who does the most in a week. We record runs and hikes on there. Also a ton of people say ďoh my pack 10lbs more this year so I better get stronger.ĒI just take the other approach and drop 10lbs of body weight.

Went to the gym today. Bench, Squats sets of 10, shoulders, curls+triceps, back. Leave tomorrow afternoon for a work trip through late Thursday. Iíll be at the mercy of whatever the gym at the JW Marriott in DC... probably okay, if I actually have time and energy to get there. The squats today after the ski hill Thursday... Definitely a good follow up for the legs. Going to be limping for the front end of this trip.

I did a solo overnight scouting trip on the weekend. Hiked 12 mi.  Did another 4 miles on Tues. and set another trail cam. I am 1 lb. better than my target weight. Never felt better except my golf game sucks right now.   :train:

Went up to middle park Thursday evening with a friend. Met his guide and stayed the night in their cabin up on the Troublesome. Spent yesterday pulling Lakers out of Williams Fork with them. Now have new friends and more options for the future. Sun burned and full upper body work out for sure.

I started a 15 day course of Prednisone. Luckily thereís no PED testing in the elk hunting world. What was initially diagnosed as scabies last Wednesday has since been diagnosed as poison ivy/oak after a second opinion or two. So now that Iím being correctly treated I should be on the mend in a week or less. I did get a workout in last Thursday (post ďscabiesĒ treatment) but the blisters are now on my palms as well as the back of my hands, and definitely pick up in itchiness during any heat or physical exertion. In 6 hours the prednisone has already knocked out the itch so Iím hoping in 3-5 days and Iíll be back on track, hopefully with a little extra oomph in my workouts.  :-D

Working out nearly every day of the week either at the gym lifting weights (biking or running to/fro) or with a 3-5 mile run close to home. Been doing this since last hunting season. Spent most of the year eating whatever I want, but have been zero sugar since July 1 and have dropped 10 lbs in the last few weeks. Getting between 10k and 20k steps everyday. I'm ready to rock! Although, I need to start shooting more frequently.

Last thing I need to do is injury myself before the season!
