General Elk Hunting / Sticky Diaphragm Calls
« on: August 17, 2018, 10:55:45 AM »
Does anybody separate or "warm up" their multi-reed diaphragm calls before using them?

I'm going elk hunting for the first time this September, so my elk sounds remain untested. But from my turkey calling experience (Easterns in Alabama), I always had to either blow them loudly in the truck in the morning, or individually separate each latex layer from each other to get fresh, raspy tones each morning. I haven't noticed as big of a difference in sounds on "wet" vs "dry" sounds with my elk calls as I have with my turkey calls, though.

Does anybody else do this with their elk diaphragms? Do you know what i'm talking about?

1. Goal is to harvest a bull elk! (Always be prepared for success, right?!)

2. Successful season would be to walk away from this season feeling more confident about next season. This year will be my buddys and my first elk hunt (OTC Archery in CO) so we are very eager to put our game plan to the test! I will be the primary caller and have been quarterbacking the game plan from the start. Ready to be tested!

I keep a primos stretch fit face mask around my neck and pull it up when animals are close. I always think I cant hear as well with something (no matter how thin) over my ears. Even if I dont get an opportunity to cover my face, it still covers my neck, which helps.

I shoot field points until about a month out from season and rotate in broadheads from there. I cant afford to tear up that many targets! Also, good point on not tuning to chase rusty form habits. Never thought about it that way but makes sense.

I'm looking at trying some Ramcats this year. May try some original slick tricks, too, and see what flies the best.

Archery / Which broadheads have failed you?
« on: July 30, 2018, 08:03:55 AM »
Curious to hear instances where broadheads have failed to bring animals down / mechanicals have failed to open / etc.

Personally, I've had bad luck with Steel Force. I couldn't get the Sabertooths to fly right (they are also very loud in the air, btw). I also shot a whitetail doe with an older version of what is now called their "Phat head" series and the deer ran off with the arrow sticking out both sides of her. No blood (i assume due to no pass through), no arrow, no deer. Shot "looked good" from what I remember, but obviously couldn't have been perfect. Was from an elevated tree stand at 20 yards.

I hear a lot about the potential for issues with mechanicals. I have never lost a whitetail use Rage slipcam broad heads and always have had good blood trails.

Anybody have any bad mechanical or fixed BH stories?
