General Elk Hunting / Bowhunting Poem
« on: August 04, 2016, 08:46:30 PM »
Well...I put this poem together a few years ago and have it hanging up below my first bull rack.   Gets me motivated every time I read it, so thought I'd share it with all my like minded brothers out there (although some parts may be more particular to me).

BOWHUNTING

Always in my mind
The lessons learned from last year
Bowhunting isn’t a hobby
Bowhunting is my career

Preparation consuming me
Throughout the entire year
What changes do I need to make
What new additions to my gear

No one can explain
This burning feeling in our guts
That drives bowhunters to succeed
That drives our wives nuts

Maybe it’s the perfect stillness
Seeing nature a way no one else can
Or maybe it’s the desire for perfect victory
Born into the heart of a challenge thirsty man

Heart and mind in two places
Missing family and feeling alone
One bugle snaps you back to the mission
Helping an arrow find its home

Though when the stars finally align
You’ll get to start the clock
How long does one need to wait
When your arrow is red tip to nock

Hopefully blessed with a perfect hunt
Your trophy lying in the brush
Your heart grateful for a clean kill
Calming yourself after the amazing rush

The ultimate challenge awaits
Each and every year
Could this be the season
I tag an elk, pronghorn, and deer

No matter what happens
Success or painful defeat
Any day in the elk woods
Is truly an amazing treat

Hunt Planner / wrench in my plans
« on: February 07, 2013, 06:08:13 PM »
anyone else have a wrench thrown into their plans yet?  just found out my wife is pregnant and is due the same week i plan on being in the mountains.  i'm hoping i can make something work at the end of the season, but we'll see what happens.  exciting and awesome to be having another child, but my wife also knows the timing isn't perfect.  first thing she said when the doctor gave the due date was....oops, that's hunting season  :-\

Physical Conditioning / distance running for big guys
« on: January 19, 2013, 11:03:38 PM »
signing up for races this year and i'm going back and forth between doing a full or half trail marathon in june.  i always do the half, but have always wanted to do the full.  however, i lift a lot and i'm always around 215 pounds.  and after a half marathon, my knees are pretty banged up.  i was wondering if any other guys in my situation decided to do a full, and if so, how much harder was it on your body?

Hunting Gear / qwik clot?
« on: January 19, 2013, 10:55:11 PM »
Anyone ever get a nasty injury and have to use qwik clot?  If so, how did it perform?  I always have some in my first aid kit and have yet to need it.

Campfire / funny stuff
« on: January 19, 2013, 10:52:24 PM »
Just talked with a buddy and wanted to pass on a funny story from his hunt last fall.  He said he had a successful hunt and was in the process of hauling his bull back to the truck when he discovered about 10 guys showed up and set up a few tents right near his truck.  They hadn't noticed him hauling anything out yet when they decided to walk over and ask how the deer hunting was in the area.  His response, "I don't know, I'm hear for elk".  There response, "We've been hunting here for years, there aren't any elk up here".  He laughs and they all go get prepped for there hunt and hop on there quads getting ready to go illegally ride up the mountain (into national forest where only a hiking trail exists).  So my buddy pulls out his chain saw and drops a couple trees right across the trail.  The guys all get pissed off and ask what his problem is, "What did you do that for, there's no way we can hike all the way up this mountain on foot."  His response, "Now I know why you guys think there aren't any elk up here, and if you can't hike up that mountain than hit the gym or hunt somewhere else....no way in hell i'm letting you take your quads up into my hunting spot".  The next morning he watched a bunch of overweight and hungover guys try and hike there way up the mountain, and could only smile from ear to ear as he walked by hauling out his last load (a nice 5 x 6 head and antlers).  ;D

Hunting Gear / Bike Trailer Designs
« on: January 19, 2013, 10:25:17 PM »
For those who have build or bought a bike trailer and have used it under heavy load, I'm curious how you're experience was riding and how the bike/trailer performed?  I'm building a new trailer this year that is lighter, and my last trailer was narrow and had a rear axle mount.  Just wondered if anyone has tried both rear axle and seat post mounted trailers and can make a recommendation as to which one performed better under heavy load.  I had some issues with the trailer wanting to roll when breaking downhill.

Campfire / Denver ISE
« on: January 19, 2013, 10:15:29 PM »
Had an awesome time chatting with the Elk101 and RMA guys at the Denver ISE show.  Always knew everyone was cool and shared the same passion, but it was nice to just shoot the breeze with some down to earth guys. See you guys next time you're in Colorado.

anyone have some recommendations for camo pants that breath extremely well when you're running around chasing elk on an 80 degree day?
