General Elk Hunting / Draw v OTC
« on: March 08, 2018, 07:29:46 AM »
Meeting with our group tomorrow to discuss our 2018 trip. Our last meeting we were leaning toward GMU 55. Its a draw unit but requires 0 points so we felt like we could get a tag easily. My question is what makes a 0 point draw unit better than an OTC unit?  Does it mean less elk so they limit the number of hunters?  Does it mean it has bigger bulls?  Im looking at GMU 55 but wondering if it is any better than an OTC unit. I want to have multiple areas this year and thought an OTC may provide more opportunities rather than being locked in GMU 55. I would like to hear some opinions especially from those who have spent some time hunting multiple GMUs in CO.

General Elk Hunting / VETT Bugle Tubes
« on: February 02, 2018, 08:23:59 PM »
Not sure if this belongs here or in the hunting gear section but here goes.  Its been a couple years since Ive elk hunted this I havent touched a call in awhile. Im gonna have to invest in some new reeds and looked at some bugle tubes as well. While watching some videos Ive noticed I like the sound of the Unleashed tube by Jason Phelps. I have also seen new tubes by Rocky Jacobsen with a spring in the mouthpiece. I can see where that could come across as a gimmick but I can also see that it would be beneficial. I like to have that thump on the end of my bugles and sometimes seems like I get that sound but then again no idea what its sounding like from several hundred yards away. Im curious what folks who have used a tube with the VETT system think.

I should state I have dabbled in making turkey calls and talked to several call makers who have thought outside the box to come up with great calls. Thats why I dont dismiss this as a gimmick. I should also say, I can make some elk sounds but have no experience working bulls. I know that makes a huge difference as Ive seen guys who can make good turkey sounds but lack the experience for working a gobbler.

Said all of that to ask this, for those who have used this system, what are your thoughts and experiences. Ill likely buy a new tube shortly when I buy reeds so either convince me or sell me something different. Thanks.

Archery / Shout out to Tighspot
« on: January 26, 2018, 06:58:21 PM »
Just wanted to give a shout out to Tightspot. Ive had mine for years and decided to adjust the height a little and change the balance on my bow. I just happen to notice that both carbon rods were cracked. I sent them an email and got a prompt response stating they would repair it but most likely replace it with a new one. It would continue to hold up for awhile but I tend to fall a little in the mountains. That quiver had taken a beating and survived several falls and one broken pull up rope from 20 feet. Great product and great warranty!

Archery / Anybody have a Spot Hogg with MRT
« on: January 19, 2018, 04:00:37 PM »
Kind of putting the cart before the horse but I ordered a Fast Eddie XL thinking it would take awhile to receive. S and S showed 4-6 weeks but it only took a week. I dont have a new bow to mount it on but looking at it, is the triple ring guard helpful?  It looks to me like Im gonna have to use a large peep if I use the triple ring guard. If anybody is using one with the triple ring, what size of peep are you running to get it to center up?

General Elk Hunting / Advice for CO
« on: January 19, 2018, 02:49:09 AM »
I know there are a few guys here that either live in CO or have hunted it quite a bit.  Ive been there myself but only twice and only once with an elk tag in my pocket.  I know there are some units that one can draw with 0 points or buy leftover tags. I also know you can buy OTC tags for some units.

I plan on being there this fall and will have a group of 6. We are getting together this weekend to start planning. One in our group has killed some elk and will likely have some suggestions and locations in certain units.  He hasnt been out there for elk in a couple of years so his areas may not be what they were.  Im not after anybodys stomping grounds that requires putting in a lot of work and miles and I certainly realize that.

Heres the things I would like to know if anybody would care to volunteer the info-hunting pressure, preferred time to go, units that hold few elk or maybe trend of the population.  Once we have ironed out some locations Ill likely have some more questions like road conditions, possibly a place to store meat and maybe additional tags to pick up like mulie or bear.

I think our first option is to attempt to lease hunting rights on a private ranch but Im not real optimistic on that. Im up for hunting about anywhere in CO but if I can avoid an area with blowdowns that would be awesome. Im anxious to get started on planning this hunt and have an idea where Im going so I can start scouting on GE.  Thanks.

Archery / 2018 Bows
« on: January 13, 2018, 03:07:18 PM »
Im interested in opinions on this years (as well as previous years) bows. Im currently shooting a PSE Inertia at 60lbs. Its a shooter and Im happy with it but Im looking to go back to a 70 lb bow.

Ive shot a PSE Evolve 31 and 35 as well as a PSE Carbon Stealth. Ive also shot a Mathews Halon 32, Halon X and a Triax.

Others bows I would like to try are Prime Logic, Obsession Phoenix XL and K34 and an Elite Ritual.

So far Im leaning toward the Evolve 35. I want to be able to push a 400 grain arrow around 300 FPS with my 29 draw length.

General Elk Hunting / Just wanted to say Hi!
« on: January 12, 2018, 08:40:50 PM »
Im coming over from BTO but its been awhile. I recognize some of the guys and look forward to catching up. I havent made it out west the past couple of years due to some health problems but I think Im gonna make it this fall. Got a group of guys together and were in the early stages of planning for CO or ID. Possibly leasing private in CO but that hasnt been decided yet. One thing is for sure Im not in the same shape I was two years ago. Its time to start working out. Especially after suffering such a despressing fall due to my beloved Hogs sucking so bad :???:

Well hi to all the guys from BTO and good luck to those who still may have tags to fill.
