General Elk Hunting / Re: Should my diaphragm look like this?
« on: July 11, 2018, 11:35:15 AM »
Mckayam1,

That is actually a good thing! That little ridge shows that your are producing a good seal on the diaphragm, which helps focus your air across the latex, which helps with everything (volume, control, etc.). No worries there at all, and it won't affect the longevity or the quality of the sounds from the call. Good luck this fall!

General Elk Hunting / Free 30-Day Trial from GoHunt!
« on: July 11, 2018, 11:10:25 AM »
Hey folks!

Most of you probably know that I am a big supporter of GoHunt and their INSIDER membership due to the incredible amount of research tools it provides for finding elk hunting areas and planning my hunts. Well, they are running a limited-time special and providing a 30-day free trial for Elk101 followers! All you have to do is go to the link below and sign up, and you'll get full access to all the information they offer for 30 days - for free! Here is the link:

https://www.gohunt.com/elk101

If you haven't seen any of the features provided in the INSIDER membership, you're able to select what state you want to research, then narrow down your search based on a ton of factors like species, draw odds, success rates, trophy potential, season, amount of public land, etc. If you're looking for a new hunting area, this is hands-down the most powerful tool I've ever found. Plus, they have a full menu of accurate draw odds for pretty much any western state and species you can imagine.

Anyway, just wanted to pass along this free opportunity to help dial in your elk hunting plans and areas...

I'm selling this for my 11-year-old son, Sam. He won this at the RMEF Elk Calling Contest, and wants cash as he's saving up for a motorcycle...

Here is what the website says about it:

The F100 Big Top pack is an outstanding mountaineering style/military quality pack. With robust features and a focus on maximum performance and volume paired with minimal weight, the F100 fits roughly in the category of our V90. It can be attached to the Mainframe in order to take advantage of its robust load carrying capabilities, and between-the-pack utility space. The Big Top features dry-bag style roll-tops, big frontal openings, double decker load bay, and lightweight but extremely tough construction.

Features:
- Expandable roll top entry
- Front and side compression straps. When combined with the Mainframe pack these straps will compress and hold quarters, duffels, and any other gear you need to carry.

- Classic aluminum stays frame system with vertically adjustable harness system. Fits most torso lengths and customizable frame contour.
- Front loading top and bottom compartments can be combined into one large space or used separately..
- MOLLE-10 matrixes hold traditional MOLLE accessories while weighing 60% less than standard 25mm MOLLE arrays.
- Easy to attach guns to the side of the pack, butt in bottom pocket and held to pack with compression/grapple straps.
Weight: 7 lbs 6oz
Retail price on this pack is $349.
Sam will take $175, plus $20 shipping in the US.
If you're interested, please email me at corey@elk101.com.

Classifieds / SOLD! NIB Swagger Bipod (50% off retail) - SOLD!
« on: April 12, 2018, 04:01:06 PM »
I'm selling this for my 11-year-old son, Sam. He won this at the RMEF Elk Calling Contest, and wants cash as he's saving up for a motorcycle...  :|

Here is what the website says about it:

Unlike traditional stiff-legged bipods, shooting sticks or monopods, Swagger does more than simply function as a barrel rest. The adjustable telescoping legs feature flexible joints that allow infinite maneuverability, which means you get the stabilizing benefits of the bipod without the restriction of the stiff legs. Swagger allows you to maneuver in any terrain and any situation, constantly stabilizing your shotgun, rifle, muzzleloader or crossbow while you raise up or lower down, slide left or turn right, move forward or lean back. And, with the push of a button, Swagger transforms from full flex to rigid legs. Swagger also lets you shoot prone, sitting or standing. No other gun bipod can do this.

With Swagger, you can raise up, lower down, slide left, inch right, move forward, lean back, twist or contort as the shot calls for. And, Swagger retracts into the chassis for easy, quiet transport.

Retail on this is $199. Sam will take $100, plus $10 shipping in the U.S.

Please email me at corey@elk101.com if you're interested.

General Elk Hunting / Re: Which game bags are you using for elk?
« on: March 01, 2018, 11:04:16 AM »
Hey guys!

Just a few things to consider....

There are 2 types of Alaskan Game Bags.....the cheaper 'cheesecloth' type bags that usually run very badly and are very susceptible to tears and bugs/dirt getting through. They also have the 'Northern' style of bags that are not rolled, and are made with a completely different material. The 'Northern' style bags by Alaska Game Bags are much more durable and for the money, are a great option.

The other thing I want to mention is that I would strongly suggest staying away from cotton (i.e., pillowcases). Cotton will hold moisture, and moisture against the meat for a prolonged period can be bad. Most of the 'brand' game bags mentioned are synthetic material, and definitely the way to go.

I actually took 5 different 'brand' game bags with me on my Idaho elk hunt last year, and used one bag from each brand on my elk. I am working on editing the review to show the differences, but I wouldn't hesitate to use Black Ovis, Caribou, Alaska (Northern), or TAGS. Black Ovis and Caribou were the top 2 in my experience.

Just FYI... :-)

Hunting Gear / Re: Elk Diaphragm Care
« on: January 17, 2018, 08:49:32 AM »
Hey guys!

There are 3 things that are bad for diaphragm elk calls:

1. Heat
2. Saliva
3. Direct exposure to sunlight

The best way to care for a diaphragm elk call after use is get as much moisture off it as possible, then store it in a breathable case (allows it to dry completely and keeps it from exposure to sunlight) in a cool place (i.e., not the dash of your truck).

Following this simple routine for care of your diaphragm elk call will ensure that you get the most life out of the call as possible.

Thanks!
