Good luck, Brad!

Dan,  it totally depends on what type of hunt you're looking for.  High country velvet deer=archery or early season rifle.  Closer to the rut (we have no real rut dates but decent prerut) 4th season rifle.  I've done well bowhunting both these seasons

I had just this type of decision to make this past fall.  Seconds after I watched my arrow bury to the fletching in a bulls chest, the skies opened up.  I mean impaired vision, pull the car to the side of the road type rain.  The shot was surely lethal and I made the decision within seconds to go directly after him knowing that he could be a needle in a haystack without blood sign.  I was on the trail within 2-3 min of shooting.  Blood was spectacular, huge piles 2 feet wide by 6 feet long of frothy bubble blood.  After about 40 yds in thick cover I jumped him.  This was maybe 5-7 min after the shot.  He was obviously hurt and slowed down after about a 50 yd trot/stumble.  I could have snuck another arrow into his hind quarter at the time before he walked slowly out of sight.  I opted, based on his condition, to mark the spot and come back in the AM.  Found him the next day not 40yds from where I last saw him.  I actually think he probably dropped dead right there when I bumped him but I think I made the right decision not shooting him again or pushing further that night.

To say that it can vary from spot to spot is a HUGE understatement.  I've only heard a few shots in 10 years in my go to otc area and its statistically one of the most crowded units.  In CO a hunter has to be very smart in picking spots.  Hunters are predictable.  Don't go to those predictable spots;  end of FR roads, obvious camp spots, obvious basins, etc. and you can find great hunting.

Thump!  Dead bull.  I shot my bull this year from almost that exact same angle from 35 yds.  Love frontals

The big bulls are killed down there later in the rifle seasons.  I'm guessing that's what your buddy is thinking?  There are much better places to burn 10 pts for archery obviously.  4th rifle may take more than 10 pts.  Definitely not worth 10 to bow hunt.

Pin gapping!  Aim at an elk/deer sized targets at 30yds.  Put your 30 pin dead center of the kill zone.  Reference where your other pins are and remember.  You\'ll never misjudge anything from 0-50yds again.   Might sound difficult now but after a couple thousand shots it\'ll be second nature.  In top 3d tournies you\'ll see the best doing this. The draw, aim, pin gap, figure distance, let down and restart their shot sequence with a known yardage.   It is definitely \"cheating\" but its not illegal.
