I will be hunting archery in Idaho. I will have 7 full days on the ground. Overall, I probably have 8 to 10 percent chance for success. If the opportunity presents I will be prepared but getting that opportunity can be elusive. I am excited first time to Idaho. Going with two good buddies expecting an adventure!

General Elk Hunting / Where to pitch my tent?
« on: March 03, 2019, 09:00:12 AM »
I plan a trip out west this fall. I will likely do most of my sleeping near my vehicle in an effort to be more mobile if circumstances (lack of sign) dictate a move to another area. I have several areas circled on the map that would potentially be accessed from one parking spot. My question is if I find an promising area, a distance from my vehicle (say 2 miles)and I choose to return the following day a stay in country overnight to reduce travel time. What should I consider as far as where to camp? Obviously I dont want to camp on top of elk but in an effort to get deeper if that is where sign takes me what should I be thinking about?

Archery / Curious to hear opinions on cutting diameter...
« on: November 24, 2018, 10:05:47 PM »
I want to move to a fixed blade broadhead for elk. I put the 125 gr Vipertrick on my Christmas list. I am shooting 27.5 draw, 60 lb draw weight. Gold Tip Hunter XT weighing an estimated 443 gr with the broadhead.  I like the cut on contact of the Vipertrick, I figure this would be the most efficient considering my setup is a little light. Knowing shot placement is ultimately the most important, I am curious to hear if the 1 1/16 cutting diameter is adequate for elk or should I consider something bigger? Is bigger better?

I cut nearly 30 lbs in preparation for the season last year and completed a Train to Hunt challenge. Compared to my first trip in 2014 I moved so much better on the mountain. It gets said so much on the podcasts and YouTube but being in the best condition you can pays huge dividends! Time to start training for 2019.

General Elk Hunting / We all want to get away from people...
« on: September 19, 2018, 08:26:00 PM »
I have recently begun doing some research of elk grounds in Colorado and Idaho trying to decide what to do next year. I have had the opportunity to go to an area in central CO twice OTC with my bow. My nephew hunted this area this year and encountered 11 other hunters. It is fairly common to read on these forums hike in deeper to avoid people. I certainly believe that is a accurate strategy. Getting to my question, you study up decide on an area, figure out access, is it reasonable to think you can avoid other hunters on public land. What are some unwritten rules when crossing paths with other hunters? One other question In general are BLM lands less pressured than general USFS land?
Thanks for thoughts.
