General Elk Hunting / Re: Hunting from above
« on: August 03, 2019, 10:23:34 AM »
Been wondering the same thing. I think my plan of attack is to play the odds. I have to make an educated guess as to where they'll be (or do a location bugle and find them), then go a mile or so along the ridge before dropping down. Once I'm on their level, it shouldn't matter what the thermals are doing, unless the prevailing wind is strong enough to blow the wind sidehill instead of up or down.

Full disclosure: I've never elk hunted before, this will be my first season, so I have no idea if this will actually work.

I would if I could... In Canada, pistols are "restricted" firearms and can only be carried and used at specially licensed gun ranges. If I could, I'd carry a Glock 10mm.

Hunt Planner / Southern Alberta Elk Question
« on: June 12, 2019, 09:06:01 AM »
Hi all,

New to this forum and new to elk hunting. September will be my first time archery elk hunting. Would appreciate even a small nudge of guidance regarding southern Alberta if anyone has hunted it?

I plan to explore the Porcupine Hills, Bob Creek, and Livingstone areas. My general question is this:

For the early season, does anyone know if the elk are more likely to be up a little higher and further west, such as Livingstone, or are they in the Bob Creek and Porcupine hills that time of year too?

I noticed the Porcupine Hills seem to have way higher hunter success rates, but I wonder if that's later in the season with rifle hunters, and if they'll even be there at all until October or November.

I'm happy to hike my butt off, just a little guidance on which massive swath of land to start on would be hugely appreciated.
