General Elk Hunting / Re: Favorite week of September to hunt

I have been looking at sep 7 -27 ish dates this year but looking at the colorado 2017 book i see muzzleloader opens sep 9 to 17, right in the middle of when i was looking.  I'm not so sure about being in the public woods whilst smoke poles are running around?

maybe i should look at opening day to sep 8? or am I looking at it wrong and over nervous?

Im entertaining the thought of renting a cabin in the durango area so the wife and pups can have a place to stay while I run up and down the mountains blowing cow calls.

any thought on the area and the idea of this?

I think it surrounded by units 75,76 and 741.  Ill be bow hunting and tend to like thicker dark timber, any votes on which of these units would suit my style?

Am not stuck on SW CO, it was just one that I found an affordable cabin that I thought the wife and dogs would be safe while I did my thing.

There was another up near craig but the GMU I was looking at was a good bit away unit 24 or maybe 12.  12 looked to have a lot of private though.

Awesome that gives me some stuff to try out over the summer months.

When i got ready to go to NM I spent july and august dehydrating lots different deer jerky flavors and fruits which worked out well with the exception that the ones that turned out really good, i forgot the recipe.

thanks guys

5 night bivy elk bow trip list your food items you'd pack.
Assuming water is plentiful and you have jet boil or equivalent.

Looking for ideas

Since I decided to shoot for a little better unit in az, my almost sure thing is now at 20-30% so I'll be working to plan a hunting trip to CO as a backup.  Mid march AZ draw results will determine my September fate, unless the NM computer messes up and pulls my number again.

I say this to throw out there that I'm open to anyone wanting to meet up with me here, there or yonder is welcome,  shoot me a PM.  If we don't jive for whatever reason I'll head off solo, but unless your loud, obscene, a know it all or a complainer, there are few folks i don't get along with.

About me:
Will be bow hunting, my schedule is very flexible, plan to take 2-4 weeks off.
Hunt dates flexible.

My elk hunting experience is that I hunted twice in NM and got one bull, but got nothing on CO except a few pref points, never stepped foot there.

I'm 48 need to loose some weight and starting to feel age but I still hunt daylight to dark.

I've been bowhunting "stilking " white tails since 1992

Have everything but a camper and wall tent. I plan to bivy from truck making loops but it's all dependent on elk.

Am looking for 3 YO + bull no trophy just personally would pass on a spike,  2nd to last day standards go far out the window.

It's all about being outdoors, the experience and the challenge.

Would enjoy calling in a bull for someone else as much as letting the string go myself.

If I tag early I'm staying with buddies if can figure / find place to store meat.

Don't mean to hijack thread.  Am just in same boat .

Yep I'd wait a bit and hope my bow aim is lots steadier than my camera aim.

Ok, Was just curious if you were partial to, went there or one of their satilite schools.  I went back and added an associates to my vo-tech education back in 05 up at their Montecello extension.

Never been a big sports fan too much myself but the wife is from Lake Charles and is all about the Tigers.  We are actually in the process of moving up near Ol Arkys neck of the woods from North Louisiana.

So far, I've not let her take down the Razorback signs in the yard, lol.

This post gave me flashbacks from taking college algebra in a summer session a few years back.

[quote author=MOmanJ My mind is a bit fried.   I should have made better notes. New to the Western draw and systems and figuring it out.

It gets worse when you've finally got some points banked in several states and try to figure how to not draw two or more in the same year. now add in trying to add an antelope, mulie and moose hunt somewhere.

i consider it self inflicted madness.

Thats a handy app, I see what your referring to, wonder how accurate it is.  It looks like an excellent reference tool.   Thanks for info, seems I got some soul searching to do this week.

Just needed to figure out if I wasting my time and money.

Hi WW, glad to get a job where I'm gonna get some time off to head out west somewhere this year.

Thanks for advise,  I'm not particularly excited to hold up in a hot tent in August but it is on my "to do" list.

Since I lost my job a couple years ago I've been out of the hunting thing till this year.  Lucked up and got a really good job with some off time.  Time to dig out and dust off all my research stuff at do some new homework.

Have been just buying points where I thought I might get to go one day.  In the mean time I'm trying to figure out what's a waste and what's worth pursuing from this point.

Thanks for advise

So I've got 3 Colorado elk, deer and prong points.  Don't think I've got enough to throw in for deer or elk so thinking to throw at lope.   Am ready to scratch that off bucket list.

Any suggestions for unit and strategy would be great.  I'll be bow hunting so will be interesting.  I've got 3-4 weeks I can take off so hopefully have time to scratch out an elk hunt after that.

id swear my bow makes that sound when i miss

You can put in for me next year, heck, you can also buy me a powerball ticket too, congrats
I did pull a deer tag for 34 so if anyone here gonna be in 34 and I get to go I can do some doubling up to scout elk while deer hunting.
