Advice: Elk hunting is doable but you gotta want it. While no shortage of work, with some hustle you can be prepared for a DIY or Guided adventure you have been dreaming. Life is short, go get it!

Season prep:

Weighted tire drags, long walks with a 50 lb sand filled pack, and miles of lunges.

What am I most excited about for next season?  The sight and smell of the horses and tack at the trailhead, the image of smoke bellowing out of the stove pipe of a wall tent at the end of a meadow, and the sound of the season's first bugle.

We are always running 4-6 head of stock in our elk camp so bone in is the way to go for us.  Full Quarters always ride better than the loose neck/rib meat etc. thrown on top of a pack saddle.

Carrying those loads out on your own back might change that view though...although loose meat always shifts more than bone-in.

I started hunting with my family before I can even remember.  Growing up in Northern Louisiana, I was 4 or so when I entered my first dove field and then 6 when I started the annual journey out to West Texas to hunt deer and turkey with my grandfather, father, uncles, brother, and cousins.  We still venture out to Juno, TX every year in search of Aoudad and deer, and I have been hauling my boys out sincethey were 4 years old.

Luckily for me, the love for the Rocky Mountains started at a young age during family summer trips.  Something about the wild animals in wild places always stirred up dreams of big adventures for me.  As a result, after college I went to work for an elk outfitter near Moose, Wyoming and haven't looked back since.  The fire was lit.

Now back in South Louisiana, there are no archery elk hunters in my circles.  Thus, in 2012 I decided to put in for a Gila NM tag and pulled it.  While I wasn't successful that year, I did come close twice and I had found my quarry.  Now focused on Colorado, my annual archery elk hunt has become non-negotiable.  Nothing rivals the elk woods in September for me and I know that most folks in this forum share those feelings.  Best of luck this year everybody...

My 2015 Idaho bull.

I felt very fortunate to tag this old monarch as the bulls were tight lipped this year in my area. Persistence paid off!  :D

Impressive, congrats.  Any other pics to share of the bull?

That is a stud.  Did you green score him?

saturday September 5th ended up being my most successful day in the elk woods. Using the challenge bugle I called this big bruiser in for a 25 yard broadside shot. He came running in when I hammered him with a challenge bugle each time he bugled. After three of them he couldn't take it anymore. After the shot he ran 50 yards and piled up. It all happened within 5 minutes, from the time I located him to the time of the shot. I feel blessed. Now I get to call for my old man and my brother.

Thanks to coreys suggestion I took the bull if my dreams. Thanks Corey. Hope everyone else's season is as fruitful as mine. Hunt hard and shoot straight.
