Campfire / So. driving to the Arctic Circle?
« on: February 21, 2020, 12:15:37 PM »
i think it would be the epic-est roadtrip of a lifetime.

my 2006 Toyota Tacoma is still solid and reliable.   i would need a few modifications, but i kinda want to keep it relatively stock.

up thru the Yukon Territory and then on the infamous Dempster Highway.

if i had a friend with a second truck lock it in with me, i would be gone this summer/fall.

my wife said okay.  my boss?  not so much..i think i would need 6-weeks

Campfire / the hell? SEPTEMBER?!!
« on: September 04, 2019, 08:57:29 AM »
you know that saying? "busy like a one-legged man in a butt kicking contest"?

well:  i think that guy is lucky to have one leg.  hahhaha.

sorry i have been MIA from the forum.  been super busy at work.  we have one Resident Engineer in my office.  he runs a construction project for the State of California.  i am a bridge engineer, and i only run the structures within that project.  our Resident Eng, has mental problem -> he's lazy.  he is working on 3 projects.  and doing a crap job at it.  running out of money, and behind schedule.

i got volunteered (voluntold?) to be an RE to help him out.  i hit the projects head on with borderline OCD.  funny thing..i counted on my list.  i have EIGHT PROJECTS!!  keep in mind, i am also the bridge guy in the projects.  so i can honestly say, i am running 16 positions.  SIXTEEN!  the more i get done, the more they give me.  i finally told them no, last week to my 9th project.  fudge that.  elk season is coming!!

i am blessed i drew a dec hunt.  i think the State of CA wouldnt let me go this month.  crap is literally hitting the fan : in the form of the rain season is coming, and i cant get a bunch of designers to make a call.  i am punting and moving ahead..i put them behind the 8-ball.

i have a blank check with OT.  i am trying to keep in "elk-shape" and my bow shooting in "elk shape".  to that end, i am happy elk are huge.  :)

i'll try to sneak off to shoot at some sandhill crane, and lucky my brother is a scouting.

i cant wait for my project to complete.

gotta go!  my phone is ringing...

mid year!

Yesterday I did a hike with friends. I brought my weighted hunt pack. The trail is called Sea to Sky.

We did a portion. 10 ugly miles. Climbed 1870 feet. Man I feel it.

Today, jumped on my bike just to loosen up sore joints. My ride was sloooow. But great.

On a side note. My Garmin Instinct watch is awesome. Tracks my progress and stats. And I can glance at my wrist when I get a text message. No more stopping to check my phone. Its a great feature when I have one due out for work emergency texts.

Back on topic. Hiking with a weighted pack is a great prep. Works muscles younforget you have.

Physical Conditioning / emailed my doc about my max heartrate.
« on: June 04, 2019, 09:08:23 AM »
ive been climbing hills on my bike.
i finally got a watch all the cool kids are wearing.  the Garmin Instinct.  it tracks my rides and my HR.  i was shocked at the data.  first my ride is way longer than i thought all these years.
and my HR, it hits 181 at the more heinous of climbs.   conventional wisdom is 220 minus my age..puts me at 168bpm.  i can still whisper at 181..
i know cars..red line is okay..over red-line.  no bueno.
my doc is stoked.  she said to stay at it.  i hope my max drops as i progress.  i think it will as my body gets more efficient.  my resting HR is 61..not bad for a geezer. hehe.

after 13 years of spiking my cap into the dirt and stomping on it in April.  BOOM!

My brother and I put in separately and both drew a hunt. The same hunt.

Its a new New Mexico hunt. We are calling it our CHRISTMAS HUNT  a.k.a. The We are gong to annoy the hell out of our significant others hunt. it is the week before the big holiday. No last minute shopping, no holiday parties, no chestnuts roasting...ah, you get the idea.

But holy heck. Archery in the dead of winter. My brother is already running cameras out there. His friends are all looking for water. Biologist are in speed-dail...

Winters are mild by most standards. This is unit 34.

Im exercising already. My cardio is already way better. I need to rig up a safe backyard in my garage for daily shooting, even at hyper close range. Maybe a couple of giant arrow bags. Im not great at Sheetrock repairs. Its a challenge for me to find time to exercise and shoot my bow. Maybe take up trail jogging/bow shooting in a hybrid decathelon thing. Hehe.

Hunting Gear / 1-800-knifeaddict!
« on: May 11, 2019, 11:42:45 PM »

Ive been trending towards smaller folding knives. I even started gutting a few animals with folders. They need not be huge. I also wanted something less well known. Off the beaten path so to speak. Thin slicy blades, less than 3 long.

I found one that ticks all my buttons (for now :))

Well here is the latest.

A GIANTMOUSE Knife. This is the Ace Biblio.

Campfire / Check out my flooded gas station.

Biblical rains in my area. Ive been in San Diego all week for work. Worried sick for my wife. Alls well.

But my area took a beating again. First we had a drought so the place burned to a crisp. Now, oh you want some rain?

Kaplush!  The heavens opened.

General Elk Hunting / NM E-Tag?
« on: February 19, 2019, 02:31:46 PM »
right or wrong, i got all excited about the e-tag option and clicked on it.  i think it's pretty neat the Dept leapt into the update with panache.

i hunt quail and dove in NM despite the results of the elk draw..on good year's i get a landowner permission letter from a rancher friend that lets me chase his mule deer population around.
i got to thinking..hey, i didnt think about the ramifications of the e-tag on my other hunts.
oh well, it will work out.  i know it.  NM is pretty savvy.

good luck friends.   you all going for the E-tag?

Other Big Game Hunting / i cant believe turkey season is within eyeshot!!
« on: February 15, 2019, 04:14:50 PM »
man..life is flying by.  the only good thing; seasons seem to roll back around quick.
who's going!!

i am leaving the shotgun home this years.

arrow or pellet.  my only options.

Archery / Pride.
« on: February 15, 2019, 03:44:40 PM »
i put Pride on hold recently.  i've come to grips lately with things.
just got my bow back yesterday.  had 50-60lbs installed.  shot a bunch up close in my garage while the skies proceeded to fill my rain gauge to the 5" mark (in 3 days).  i pulled out my chronograph and shot a disappointing by VERY consistent 242 fps., ,my bow limbs are still turned down.  the pro-shop told me it is at 55 lbs.  (unconfirmed by me).  arrow programs tell me i will get 258 when i crank it up to approx 62lbs.  but that is way later.  55 will plunk a turkey just perfectly!!
i need to start shooting lots!  a lighter draw killed my last excuse to do so. :)
anyone shooting low poundage..can we start a support group? :D

Archery / time to get reaquainted with archery.
« on: January 31, 2019, 02:04:49 PM »
i admit.  the luster of bowhunting tarnished for me.  couple of reason.
1. swapping over to a left hand bow.  granted my left eye is awesome compared to my janky right eye.2. my mtn-bike crash last summer really hurt me badly.  my shoulders and elbows ache constantly.  PT lady said i need to draw back a lighter bow.
i put it off and off.  yesterday, i had to call my wife and ask, "honey, where is my bow?"
i blew off the dust, stomped on the spiders and drove it over to my buddies bowshop.  i ordered 50-60lb limbs.  this is a Hoyt Carbon Defiant34.  its a nice bow.  i am CERTAINLY not buying a new bow.  just in case the luster never comes back.
i think it is a mixture of pain and the remaining oddness of drawing and holding a bow back lefty.  i need more time behind it and in order to get it done, i have to suck it up and go lighter.

i hope/pray my (now) overspined arrows still fly right..i suspect they will.   i have 3-dozen of them. :)

Hunting Gear / Im making my brother crazy. :)
« on: January 22, 2019, 03:12:05 PM »
somehow, he got a free all access pass to Shot Show.

I keep texting him to check out various booths. He apparently scored me a MR cap.

Now he wont answer my calls. Haha. Anyone ever been? My head would explode!

Campfire / humor.
« on: November 01, 2018, 03:25:20 PM »
keep in mind.  i am a civil engineer.  that is all i am surrounded with.
i volunteered to fly around CA, this winter to teach a course with a few others.  we had to write our own Bios for the group leaders to read and introduce us with.
besides now being a professional powerpoint person, it has been a lot of work so far.

the funnest thing to date was writing my bio.  i made it fun.  the other bios?  OMG, i want to gouge out my mind's eye.  so boring.
i'm not checking off this green planet of ours without having squeezed the most fun and humor from it.

Hunting Gear / has the entire planet gone with the flat-bill cap?
« on: October 12, 2018, 12:47:50 PM »
i tried.  my general body shape, my head shape/size; whatever..i cant pull it off.
believe me;  i tried.  it ALWAYS ends with my wife and i laughing uncontrollably.

i dont mind logo caps..but it seems everyone is going with the flat bill.  did i miss a memo or something?

Campfire / well..I AM back at work. and i MET DAN
« on: September 17, 2018, 04:07:18 PM »
what a whirlwind.
i never drew an elk tag, but my brother did.  i promised to go with him to help.  all his friends bailed out, so i am glad i went along.  it was just us two.

we hunted Unit 51 in New Mexico.  neat unit.  we had the first hunt.  it was Hot as Hades.  it also went monsoon crazy on us for the first 6 days.  it was literally rinse, dry, repeat.  the bulls were silent.

we never got an elk..altho one came to ME and my cow-call.  walked up to seven feet of me.  i was tag-less, bow-less..i was trying to channel sibling mind talk to my brother to come to me quietly..he didnt listen.  or i dont have ESP like i thought.
anyways, that wasnt the highlight.  the highlight was running across Dan.  what i nice man....no no no..that wasnt the highlight either..the highlight was that he brought Yuengling BEER west of the Mississippi!!  i finally got to taste that beer!!  just kidding!! :D .  Dan is a hell of a guy..my brother was constantly shaking his head..saying, "damn..that is a cool guy!"

we got into elk everyday..we got into bear almost everyday..we saw Merriam turkey.  it was a good trip. we ended it a few days early for Family obligations.

didnt stop us from shoehorning in a few days of blasting NM doves!!
NICE to meet you Dan.  i hope you are killing one soon.

me i am back at work.  BOO! :(
