Well said. 90% of all hunters, hunt within 1 mile of the road. 10% of all hunters account for 90% of all animals taken.  Moral of the story is get more than 5280 feet off the road and it becomes far less crowded. JMHO

That is my friend Doug McDaniels with the moose on the cover. Had the opportunity to hunt elk with him this last year.

I have bow hunted elk in Colorado with some success. I regularly rifle hunt elk in Colorado with good success. Thought to myself why not hunt in the peak of the rut with a muzzleloader.

Santa brought me a CVA Optima, Williams western precision sights, Thor 250 grain Lightnings, some federal 209a primers, and a couple of cans of Blackhorn 209.
With 19 preference points Im not concerned about getting a tag. Still holding out to rifle hunt GMU 2 one day. So well see what comes together in 2021.

Hopefully Santa was good to you all. He left a new 50 cal smoke pole under the tree for me.
May all of you and your families have a blessed and merry Christmas and May we all put
2020 behind us. :thewave:

HinCo, Yes we hunt public BLM land. There is private land there as well. No need to worry
About that.

Update, we went four out of six. A 6x4 bull, three cows. Just simply ran out of time. There was no shortage of elk. Mule deer population seems to be booming as well. Forth season GMU 3 is first and foremost a meat hunt. We have reason to be very thankful this year.

On another note there were a lot more fresh wolf tracks this year. We have come across them over the years, just seem to be more.

Hope everyone else were successful as well. Now to settle in for the winter.

So here we are, madness in politics, pandemic expanding, and time finally going by.
With all of that I am pulling out out my equipment, packing my gear, and loading the truck. Finally truly getting away from all the noise so I can focus on finding wapati and filling the freezer.

Will be going up Tuesday early to set up the wall tent and make camp comfortable. So come Wednesday morning I will be on my favorite point looking over three draws that have always been good to me. With multiple snows already hitting the west Elkheads  it feels right.

This is what brings brings me joy. Good luck to all and shoot straight. :-D

General Elk Hunting / Re: Tire chains
« on: August 20, 2020, 08:01:35 PM »
We hunt northwest Colorado and carry chains because when the clay gets wet it becomes slick. We use actual chains. I carry a set for the front and a set for the rear on my 4wd. My thoughts are better to have and not need then need and not have. We also have chains for our atvs for the same reason.

Other Big Game Hunting / Re: 2021 CO antelope unit recommendations
« on: July 09, 2020, 06:34:09 PM »
Shane I have not drawn antelope tag in 6 years in an area that only requires one preference point. So now I have 6 PPs. If you figure out the secret combination please  share it.

I have a buddy who is now up to 12 points and did not draw a tag in an area that requires 5.

CPW has in their infinite wisdom made drawing an antelope tag a rare thing. That being said, look at  GMU 11.

General Elk Hunting / Re: Are elk hunters social distancing?
« on: July 08, 2020, 10:32:16 AM »

This is not political. Wearing a mask is not about any of us. It is about everyone we come in contact with. Whether you agree or disagree is not the point. We owe it to each other and everyone else to do what we can. Wearing a mask is a small inconvenience
that could help us get through this. Just my thoughts.
