Hunting Gear / Re: Game bags

Yeah, we carry both the Northern and Caribou Game Bags in the Elk101 Store. I also use both bags, depending on the hunt...

You guys must be using different Alaska Game Bags than I use... :-)

I really like the lightweight "Northern" game bags by Alaska Game Bags. I used them and the Caribou Game Bags this past fall on the same bull for comparison purposes and both bags have pluses and minuses.

Alaska Game Bag "Northern" bags - $11 for 4 of them, half the weight of the Caribou Medium Quarter Bags, compression fit, stretch to fit over end of boned quarter. Tight enough weave they do not let dirt or bugs in. Synthetic material.

Caribou Medium Quarter Bags - $52 for 4 of them, heavier than "Northern" bags, very tight weave....no bugs or dirt can get in. Drawbacks - heavier, no compression, so lots of wasted material (weight/space).

If I wanted a bag I could use over and over and I wasn't as concerned about counting ounces, and if I wasn't set on leaving quarters in, the Caribou bags are GREAT!

If I'm going deep and counting ounces, and need a reliable bag that is light and small (and inexpensive), I will carry the "Northern" bags by Alaska.

Here's footage I took with a Contour in 2011 in Wyoming. I had it mounted to my hat and the bull was at 43 yards. The footage comes out in full HD, but it's been compressed here to load to Youtube...

Hunting Gear / Re: Suggestions for a new headlamp?
« on: December 31, 2012, 01:55:25 PM »
We found an awesome (and cheap) headlamp last spring and have been really impressed with it. It is 160 Lumens (bright) and only weighs 4 oz. It runs on 3 AAA batteries and I did a battery check and found it will run continuously for 72 hours before it starts to dim. The best part is they sell for just $29.95...

Hunting Gear / Re: warm weather pants

For really warm weather, the Sitka Ascent pants are great. I started using the Sitka Mountain Pants 2 years ago and now wear them anytime I'm hunting elk in September, regardless of the temperature. They are bombproof, shed water like crazy, and are the perfect companion for active hunting!

FYI, all Sitka gear at the Elk101.com Store goes on sale at 20% off in January....  ;)

Elk Hunting Tips & Tactics / Re: Sent & Scent control
« on: December 31, 2012, 01:48:59 PM »
As many of you have stated, I too believe the wind is the key. One thing to keep in mind...if the elk can smell the scent wafer or urine you sprayed on your boot, they can smell the stench coming off your skin just as well. There is no way to 100% contain or eliminate your scent, and with millions of scent receptacles in their noses, elk are going to be able to pick up on it. I do use scent eliminating sprays to give me an extra degree of advantage, but in no way do I ever think I am scent free or try to approach the elk with the wind going at them.

Just FYI, we didn't remove the security feature, it only asks for it on your first 5 posts. After that it goes away. Glad it's working for you now!

Forum Help / Re: Auto Censoring

It was seeing the "p-read end-ing" and censoring the middle part with "rear end".... :-)

The auto censoring has been adjusted and should be working better now.

Should be the first 5 posts, then never again. Let me know if that's not the case. Once the system determines you're a real person, you should be good to go... :-)

Archery / Re: New Hoyts
« on: December 29, 2012, 08:10:33 PM »
I shot the 2013 Hoyts at Idaho Archery Company a month or so ago....I was set on the Carbon Matrix, but they talked me into shooting the Spyder 34....my new Spyder 34 should be here any day... :-)

The Charger ($499) is an awesome bow for the price as well. Good stuff from Hoyt this year for sure!

I started shooting G5 Strikers about 4 years ago and love them! They fly great on my set up and have never failed me in the field. I did shoot the Slick Tricks last year for a few months and have no complaints, but they didn't fly as well for me out past 40 yards, so I went back to the Strikers...

Scouting / Trail Cameras / Re: worth the effort
« on: December 29, 2012, 08:02:02 PM »
I use them all the time, and love them! I did have one stolen (it was in a fireproof, locked case with a chain and 2 padlocks)....they cut the tree down it was attached to and slid the chain off the tree....I'm sure they spent quite a while getting into it when they got home.... :-)

Other than that one time, I haven't had any issues with people messing with them.
