General Elk Hunting / Which state is the toughest?
« on: September 28, 2019, 10:00:40 AM »
Anybody out there have an opinion about which state is toughest to elk hunt in general? I'm referring to general hunts on public land. I live in MT and I have consistent success here...but it just seems like we have to damn near kill ourselves to punch our tags. There's tons of pressure, major issues with predators, and the elk seem less and less responsive to calling techniques every year. I've heard some people claim that MT is a lot tougher hunting than other states such as ID, WY, CO...that doesn't make a lot of sense to me but I haven't hunted any other states. Just curious what others think. Cheers everyone.

Hunting Gear / Wall tent stoves

What brand of stove do you recommend for your wall tent? There are many different brands out there, and I've never owned one. I was considering the "Wilderness" stove: http://www.walltentshop.com/collections/tent-stoves/products/wilderness-wood-camping-stove

Do you like having the attached water tank? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hunting Gear / Backpacking tents

I'm tagged out, but already thinking about next year...need to come up with a lighter weight tent for multi-day backpack hunts. I think I like some of the Tarptents (Moment DW maybe?), but there are a ton of other good tents out there. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

General Elk Hunting / Summer Scouting
« on: July 21, 2015, 11:33:14 AM »
Hey Everyone,

Last season was my first season elk hunting, and it was a lot of frustration and very little excitement. I'm motivated to turn things around this season, so I've been putting the miles on checking out new areas (far away from where I hunted last year)...I've been finding a lot of bulls (sometimes a dozen or more in an evening of glassing), and I'm finding quite a few rubs from last fall in the same areas. That's all very exciting..BUT...I'm worried because I have not yet seen a single cow. Not one. Most all of the bulls I've been seeing are at 8000-8500 feet.

I'm wondering...Am I scouting the wrong areas? Are all these elk going to be long gone once archery season rolls around? And where the heck are the cows? Lower I suppose? If the cows are lower now, will they eventually end up higher where I'm seeing these bulls?

Maybe I have nothing to worry about, but it just seems odd. Any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated.
