Example of a meadow I checked out during the summer. Very difficult to get to, deadfall and a mile from the road. You can bet if you find something like this during the summer, you will find a wallow like this during the season or at least some elk sign....

I love summer scouting trips. Always bring fishing gear...and maybe some beverages.
Heading to new country this year, so there might be less fishing and more hiking. New areas I will check roads, parking areas, closest town, supplies, ect. I will also park at main trials and check them out for awhile, mostly early mornings and glass the ridge line. During the day or heading back to the rig, I will venture into the dark timber and "hell holes" to check them out. Rubs, water, benches and trails. All the good stuff. I dont need to see fresh elk sign but if there is enough sign there, i know where to look when everyone hits the trail. Check the wind and make my way to the car. Afternoon fishing and a nap. Then back at it ,a new area for the night. Same thing goes for areas I will hunt again I just dont need to check off the first few things on the list. And I will just head to new drainage's that I haven't hunted. They may be over the next ridge. Or I drive 15 miles to a different area. Just depends but I will explore new country.

One piece of advice
Elk hunting out west, it can seem like really big country and you may be in a hurry to get somewhere. Slow down and be aware of your surroundings.

Prep for the season:
This could be a big list....but to keep it simple its staying in decent shape but the biggest thing is scouting new country. I make a point to look over some new areas every year and im really looking forward to that part. Its the biggest factor in being successful IMO.

awesome bull...  gets me excited for sure..  i might have missed it in one of the other posts but im curious if ND uses a point system or if its random? i work up in ND and have considered trying to hunt up there for at least deer   but this story for me and im sure for others made the decision a bit easier... anybody aware of the deadlines for applying and know the draw odds??

No point system in place for our big 3. (big horn, elk & moose)
Non residents cannot apply for moose or elk. But you could buy raffle tickets for the Game Warden Museum drawing that gives away a state wide moose and elk permit. Thats the only way I know of for a Non resident to get one of these tags.

This years calf isnt going to last much longer. I have had them last an entire year, but not this one.

Kupper,Whether North Dakota counts it or not, I believe its the largest taken with a bow.  I know of a few that havent been registered but they arent that big.

"I instead got it scored through pope and young. gross was 376 6/8" and 372 4/8" typical."
This should put you at the top of the list for what has been registered in ND.
They used to have a larger list and for some reason removed it from their website. The link I saved no longer works.

Ivar88, E2 gives out landowner contact information. E3 youll have to use onx, nd trax or head out and knock on some doors

I was one of the lucky hunters to draw a bull tag in unit E2 last year. I would recommend this unit as it has the archery only season and I encountered no hunting pressure what so ever. I already had elk pegged from mule deer hunting prior years so it wasn't much of a challenge to pattern them out before season. Practically everyone who draws the tag hunts with rifle only so you have most places to yourself during archery season. Land owners are also more willing to allow hunters during archery season because it doesn't interfere with their season if they have a gratis tag. They respond great to calls and I managed to call in several bulls. I ended up arrowing my bull on September 10th which was great given my past history of watching this bull. Just recently got it officially scored at 376 6/8. I did see several bulls over 320, 2 bulls over 360, and one bull right around 400 so the potential for a giant truly exists if you put in the work. best of luck!

I was wondering what that bull officially scored! That has to be near the top? talked to you on another forum last year when I saw you posted it.
