April Update:

Ive dropped from 229 to 224. Some of that is from working out but the majority had to do with getting a kidney stone and being sick in the meantime. I will try to lose the rest of the weight by just exercise and eating right.

Going back and looking at their site Davis actually has a 12x14 on sale for April for around $1000.  I dont think that includes a floor or poles but thats still a really good deal.

Hunting Gear / Tents?

I dont think you can go wrong either way. Youre going to spend an extra $1000 on wall tent but is probably going to last longer.

Depending on what size you get and what options, you shouldn't end up spending a whole lot more on a wall tent than a Kodiak. Definitely not $1,000. Heck, a solid 10x12 setup with poles from Davis Tent is about $700 total.

Sorry I shouldve thrown that in there. I used active junky and another discount and got my kodiak 10x14 for around $450 in the end. I was looking at the elk hunter package offer Davis offers. Its around $1600-$1800 and is I think a 14x16 with a decent number of options.

Ive stayed in several wall tents and have recently gotten the kodiak tent as well. The Davis wall tents are great and they are hard to beat when it comes to an extended stay somewhere. However for multi use purposes ( hunts and in my case family camping) I am loving the kodiak. It has lots of room, holds up great in the wind and weather, easy to heat with a buddy heater, quick and easy setup, and takes up less room in the truck.

I dont think you can go wrong either way. Youre going to spend an extra $1000 on wall tent but is probably going to last longer.

I'm in the same boat as ribo but I don't want to go as low. I'm 6'4" and weigh 229lb. I'm just getting back into playing basketball a few days a week and will start working out when turkey season ends in MS. I'd like to drop down to 220lb this summer. I like that weight and is where I feel comfortable. So that's my goal. The good Lord willing I'll be ready for elk or antelope hunting again this fall.

The black ovis bags are great. 3 elk and 2 deer on one set so far.

I usually have either a 5 or 6 arrow quiver. I always like to have 4 broadhead arrows and the rest judo tipped. Best of both worlds.

I love both of them. Whitetails are harder on public land(here in MS anyway) than mule deer in CO. Both are totally different though.

cohunter14: Sorry to hear you didn't fill any tags but sounds like you had a good time. We filled tags but only heard one bugle on public land all week.

Had a blast in a new OTC unit with a couple elk tags and a leftover deer tag. We only saw two bulls and two buck mule deer all week on the public ground but we made the most of it. [/size]We brought home both bulls and one mule deer. Couldn't ask for better success/sighting ratio. It was a great time with great friends.
