Hunt Planner / Re: Timing advice/recommendation
« on: January 11, 2020, 07:09:14 AM »
Its a tough call. Everyone dreams of the frosty mornings in the meadow listening to the herd bull ripping it loose. Then getting in close calling him in. But in reality, at least what I have found, my best success has been on opening weekend and the week after which is generally 70 or 80 degrees at 11am - 12pm on top of the mountain catching them going to bed. That time of year general we find little to no bugling and you second guessing yourself if its worth being out there or not. If you dont see elk its plane miserable, but it has been our most successful scenario.

IMO it has a lot to do with hunting pressure. I generally find if Im the first one in there its my best chance to shoot an elk. We normally plan our hunts around that.

Good luck to you,

Hello,

Im needing to get in shape for some ruff hikes. Any workout or excel or tips will be greatly appreciated!

There are a lot of variables here: age, physical health, etc. if needed be sure to clear things with your doctor.

What I would recommend is a mixture of workouts. One thing I learned about rough hunts, hikes, etc. is balance is just as important as strength. So I usually do workouts that evolve around body weight or dumbbells. These help build stability muscles which go a long way when you are walking on uneven terrain or through loose rock. If you are looking to shed lbs HIIT training helped me out quite a bit. Hike a lot if possible.

Also, on rest days or at least once a week throw in yoga, it will help with your balance plus it helps with flexibility. Flexibility is good to have when you hunt, helps you be comfortable stretching to good foot placement spots, stepping over logs and things, etc.

Everyones different and their body responds differently to workouts. Id try a few plans and see what works well for you. If you have some basic equipment at your house, Beach body on demand is a great place to find a ton of different kind of workouts and its fairly inexpensive for the memebership.

Hope this helps, good luck!

Behindthehunter, Heck Yes, sounds like you guys are kicking some elk butt on the mountain!

You guys hunting public or private?

We hunt public land, OTC tag unit. We are lucky though, we access the public ground through private land so there isnt many close access points.

Hey everyone, sitting on top of the mountain first good cell service in a few days. Started hunting opening morning. North central CO. Little to no rutting or bugling, HOT close to 85 and warm nights.  We have seen quite a few individual elk and pairs of cows. Even with all that, we have taken 3 bulls off the mountain so far. More of that story to come when Im off the mountain and have more phone battery :) good luck everyone!

Good choice to enroll in Elk101! I have a few rules that seem simple but hard to remember while you are hunting...

1. if there is no fresh sign keep moving. Ive spent/wasted a lot of time slowly walking through areas that look and feelelky but there was no fresh sign.

2. If you look at a mountain side whether from the top looking down or the bottom looking up and think, boy, going down/up there would suck. Theres a good chance you should go down/up there.

3. Your wind checker is your friend use it often, winds shift a lot. During archery season Id argue its as important as your bow and a good pair of boots. Also, dont be afraid to hike to get the right wind.

Again these are things Im sure you may know already, and they often mean more work or a longer walk in the field. Thats why I always have to remind myself these things as a hunt.

Good luck! I too will be CO for archery season, no where near you though.

Besides your basic first aid kit, paracord, and what you have on your list, Id take an extra pair of socks if you normally dont. Blisters that far back would suck..
